  • Might have been 5 stars

Dr Helen Geake is so knowledgable, sensitive, and an excellent communictor. Could Martyn be asked to stop butting in, and to stop trying to amuse? I found his 'joke' about his bird watching friend to be irritating and inappropriate.

  • Patreon previews

I loved the tv show and enjoyed the podcast up to a point, but the last episode just seemed to be a series of previews for their Patreon offerings and lacked any depth

  • Podcast improved

This podcast scratches your archaeological itch. Helen and Martyn make a great team! Interspersed with a variety of guests, this podcast is interesting and fun to listen each week. Upcoming Dani’s news section will add additional content. While it is still evolving, they make an effort to include archaeology from all over the world (not just the UK).

  • I love it

Just a lovely, warm show, which gives you a fuzzy feeling inside. One of the very few podcasts I download and listen to as soon as it’s released.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What were ancient roofs built from?
Q: How are roofing materials determined for non-tile or stone roof houses, and what evidence would indicate thatch, turf, or shingles were used?
You rule out tiles and then assess the next most likely option that doesn't conflict with negative evidence; thatch is easy to reconstruct historically, turf roofs are inferred from environmental and site context, and wooden shingles could be considered where nails and tool marks are evident, with etymology offering clues about earlier use.
What were ancient roofs built from?
Q: What are the Holocene and Anthropocene, and why are they relevant to archaeology?
The Holocene is the current geological era; the Anthropocene is a proposed era reflecting significant human impact on the planet, which influences how we interpret archaeological sites in recent centuries due to climate change, fossil fuels, and plastics burdens.
What were ancient roofs built from?
Q: During archaeological work, the further you go down, the further back in time you travel. Are there any situations where going down does not in fact go further back in time, or where all archaeology is in the same layer?
Yes, when stratigraphy is disturbed or when natural processes and human activity scramble layers, or when the archaeology is all within the same stratigraphic context, making it hard to distinguish chronological order.
The maps that unlock your family tree secrets
Q: How does map-based data change our understanding of ancestry?
Map-based data lets researchers visualize ownership, connections, and landscape context across generations, making it easier to trace ancestors and understand where they lived.
The maps that unlock your family tree secrets
Q: Why is geophysics preferred for initial site assessments?
Because it is non-invasive and quickly reveals near-surface anomalies, helping decide where to focus more invasive or expensive investigations.
