  • Might have been 5 stars

Dr Helen Geake is so knowledgable, sensitive, and an excellent communictor. Could Martyn be asked to stop butting in, and to stop trying to amuse? I found his 'joke' about his bird watching friend to be irritating and inappropriate.

  • Patreon previews

I loved the tv show and enjoyed the podcast up to a point, but the last episode just seemed to be a series of previews for their Patreon offerings and lacked any depth

  • Podcast improved

This podcast scratches your archaeological itch. Helen and Martyn make a great team! Interspersed with a variety of guests, this podcast is interesting and fun to listen each week. Upcoming Dani’s news section will add additional content. While it is still evolving, they make an effort to include archaeology from all over the world (not just the UK).

  • I love it

Just a lovely, warm show, which gives you a fuzzy feeling inside. One of the very few podcasts I download and listen to as soon as it’s released.

  • Just like the television show, these conversations dip into a wide range of archaeological content in a way that sparks curiosity and wonder. The presenters and guests clearly love the topics, and I love learning about the techniques of archaeology in addition to the discoveries. The recent Christmas quiz was good fun. Please keep the episodes coming!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The war veteran saved by archaeology
Q: Do you ever find pets or other domestic animals buried with bodies?
Yes, it happens rarely, possibly because it's unusual for a pet and their human to die at the same time.
Could archaeology become obsolete?
Q: Would Time Team ever consider tackling an archaeological site on the Western Front?
Martyn confirms they would consider it but acknowledges the complexity and need for a clear research question before undertaking such an excavation.
Could archaeology become obsolete?
Q: Have there been any major disagreements on a Time Team dig?
Helen recounts that there have been conflicts, particularly in the area of metal detecting collaboration with archaeologists, but overall, the relationships have improved.
Could archaeology become obsolete?
Q: Do you think that this trend towards no dig archaeology is going to make archaeology obsolete?
Helen argues that archaeology is broader than just excavation and that many aspects, including remote sensing, are still in practice, and excavation remains essential.
How can AI revolutionise archaeology?
Q: What are the advantages of drawing findings alongside photography in archaeology?
Drawings provide a more detailed analytical view, allowing for cumulative information over time, which photos cannot fully capture.
