  • Might have been 5 stars

Dr Helen Geake is so knowledgable, sensitive, and an excellent communictor. Could Martyn be asked to stop butting in, and to stop trying to amuse? I found his 'joke' about his bird watching friend to be irritating and inappropriate.

  • Patreon previews

I loved the tv show and enjoyed the podcast up to a point, but the last episode just seemed to be a series of previews for their Patreon offerings and lacked any depth

  • Podcast improved

This podcast scratches your archaeological itch. Helen and Martyn make a great team! Interspersed with a variety of guests, this podcast is interesting and fun to listen each week. Upcoming Dani’s news section will add additional content. While it is still evolving, they make an effort to include archaeology from all over the world (not just the UK).

  • I love it

Just a lovely, warm show, which gives you a fuzzy feeling inside. One of the very few podcasts I download and listen to as soon as it’s released.

  • Just like the television show, these conversations dip into a wide range of archaeological content in a way that sparks curiosity and wonder. The presenters and guests clearly love the topics, and I love learning about the techniques of archaeology in addition to the discoveries. The recent Christmas quiz was good fun. Please keep the episodes coming!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The maps that unlock your family tree secrets
Q: How does map-based data change our understanding of ancestry?
Map-based data lets researchers visualize ownership, connections, and landscape context across generations, making it easier to trace ancestors and understand where they lived.
The maps that unlock your family tree secrets
Q: Why is geophysics preferred for initial site assessments?
Because it is non-invasive and quickly reveals near-surface anomalies, helping decide where to focus more invasive or expensive investigations.
Plaque to the future
Q: Laura Paneuf asks how the lack of plaque preservation will affect archaeology in the future.
The answer explains that dental plaque (calculus) preserves materials like pollen, soot, and food residues, which can reveal diets, health, and even occupations; while soft tissues don't fossilize easily, the calculus record still provides a surprising amount of information about past lives.
The archaeology of language
Q: Can you explain why archaeology has this amazing gift to give to historical linguistics?
Danny Bates explains that archaeology provides the material context and dating clues that help interpret linguistic changes, such as the introduction of vowels in Greek writing and the way inscriptions reveal how language shifted over time.
Hadrian's Wall and more at Current Archaeology Live
Q: What makes Hadrian's Wall still such a focused topic for archaeologists today?
The wall embodies enduring questions about military vs. civil functions, political symbolism, and how interpretations evolve as new evidence and methods emerge, keeping it a dynamic case study for archaeology.
