  • Top notch

Deserves more reviews and listeners, well made, great tone, lots of info, from the top people in their field. Totally worth making the time for. No sensationalism, just thinking and explaining about the historic buildings and culture. May I single out dr Michael carter as bringing interest to potentially dry and obscure areas of our history and showing us why we should value this period more than we seem to. Brilliant

Not sure what audience this is aimed at but it is no longer me. Just tell the interesting scholarly stories. No need to oversell it. To say I miss the old podcast is a major understatement.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Windmills: restoring England’s working giants
Q: I'm going to ask you as well, just very quickly, Joseph, when you're making decisions about how to preserve these buildings and bring them to life, particularly as a commercial attraction, were there any aspects that you were really excited about reviving or any creative decisions you were making that felt really important to you?
The priority was safety and authenticity, aiming to restore Sibsey Trader Mill to its last working state around 1953 while balancing modern safety and maintenance needs; this involved removing unsafe elements, repairing brickwork, replacing the cap and sails with traditional methods where possible, and ensuring the structure could function again for visitors.
The hidden history of women in construction
Q: How did you begin uncovering evidence of women working in trades outside guild control?
We examined parish apprenticeship records and account books outside city guilds, then cross-referenced with site inventories and later census data to identify women in roles like bricklayers, carpenters, glaziers, and stone masons, revealing a broader pattern of involvement.
The hidden history of women in construction
Q: What first drew you to this particular topic?
I was struck by how many women were involved in building country houses beyond the famous patrons and designers, and how little of their work is visible in standard histories, prompting us to look at parish apprentices, widows, and family firms across multiple sites.
Poetry, maths and the Milky Way: the unsung genius of Thomas Wright
Q: Could you tell us more about his education and how it shaped his career given his modest beginnings?
Despite a humble early life, Wright pursued mathematics and sciences through private tutoring, which propelled him into teaching aristocratic families and eventually into publishing and scholarship.
Before 1066: how England’s elites lived, ruled, and showed off
Q: What did the Norman conquest really change in terms of power and status?
The conquest replaced the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy with Normans, emphasized military architecture, shifted focus to urban centers of power, and introduced significant numbers of stone elite constructions.
