  • Quality of tone dropped

When Charles Rowe left I stuck with it for a few episodes but the quality of the content dropped. There are more history podcasts out there. Unless there is a particularly interesting topic I’ll listen to one of them

  • Top notch

Deserves more reviews and listeners, well made, great tone, lots of info, from the top people in their field. Totally worth making the time for. No sensationalism, just thinking and explaining about the historic buildings and culture. May I single out dr Michael carter as bringing interest to potentially dry and obscure areas of our history and showing us why we should value this period more than we seem to. Brilliant

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Seeking Sanctuary: Fleeing conflict in the Middle Ages
Q: How did host countries respond to refugee movements in medieval times?
Responses varied from supportive charity and legal allowances to exploitation by officials; some communities protected refugees through networks and charitable acts, while others imposed taxes or restrictions, depending on local politics and economic pressures.
Seeking Sanctuary: Fleeing conflict in the Middle Ages
Q: What do we mean by the medieval experience of refugees given there wasn't a formal definition?
Historians interpret refugees through fragments like royal letters, city accounts, and monastery records to understand who moved, why, and how they were treated, recognizing that the concept of a modern refugee didn't exist yet.
Seeking Sanctuary: Fleeing conflict in the Middle Ages
Q: How did we arrive at this topic?
The topic emerged from threads of thinking about refugees across different periods, linking present concerns with medieval evidence, particularly around Scotland and England and the movement of people across borders.
Berwick-on-Tweed: life on the border in the 16th century
Q: Ah, so we can literally trace the footsteps of somebody's commute from the 16th century.
Linda explains that bailiff's court records show a Scots cobbler who lived in Mary Gate and commuted to Tweedmouth for lodging, giving a concrete example of cross-border movement and daily life.
The Neolithic Hall: Reconstructing History at Stonehenge
Q: What is experimental archaeology and how did you get into it?
It involves taking evidence from the ground, reconstructing it at full scale, and testing to learn more about past practices, from glues to building large Neolithic halls.
