Latest Episodes

On this one I talk with researcher Sam Buckner on hypertrophy studies and how measurements often get manipulated to show magnitudes that don't exist. Sam also talks about what to look for to determine if the muscle growth in a study is even relevant.... more

Zan Zupanic and I discuss how MYOPS works, what they can see, what they can't see, and how all of this relates to good training practices.

Nick Ronick of BFR FAME joints us for this one where we cover how BFR works, what it's best used for, what its limitations are, and why you need heavy loads for joints.

Chris and I discuss the difference in "science" and "evidence based" and why they aren't the same. And why "evidence based" is a lower standard to use than true science. We also spend plenty of time cooking our "detractors".

  • Really Misses Chris

Chris brought alot of depth to these conversations and went much deeper than just surface level. Once again, Paul burned another bridge and Chris is no longer on this show.

  • The best podcast for hypertrophy

Clearly the best podcast to listen to for hypertrophy and learning all the physiology behind the why and how.. I’ve listen to almost all the episodes and some multiple times as Chris and Paul really dig deep into discussions .. if you’re not listening to these two you’ll be left behind .. only wished I found them sooner .

  • Great Info, Endless Derision

Chris is all well and good, and I learned a good bit about neuromuscular matching and muscle fiber tension and started reading the actual studies as a result… but 60-70% of the conversation was just repeating insults toward the “Hypertrophy Hive Mind”. I get it, you disagree, but listening to Paul cackle at his own constant hatred and bad jokes really made the whole episode difficult to listen to. Came here from Chris’s IG account expecting how to practically apply the summaries and graphs from ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why hypertrophy gains HAVE to have strength gains and Q&A #1
Q: Can eccentric overload ever be a consideration if plateaus are on the exercises?
Doing eccentric overload will create substantial post-workout fatigue that deteriorates one's ability to train effectively with subsequent workouts, and any gains made will largely disappear once the eccentric training stops.
Q&A #1
Q: What training split should I follow?
Ultimately, it should focus on how to improve your six-rep max for the best muscle growth, rather than worrying about volume specifics.
Q&A #1
Q: Do we actually have enough research to even create a hypertrophy physiological model?
Yes, there are existing models as many researchers have tried to create and improve upon hypertrophy models. It’s largely based on mechanical tension and motor unit recruitment.
Q&A #1
Q: Could doing one to two reps in reserve really be as effective at training to failure?
Yes, it’s a nuanced conversation, but it is close to being true that training to failure creates unnecessary fatigue for some people.
