  • Sound quality

I took a tour with Chris the day before you recorded. What a surprise to see him on the podcast! I really enjoy your pod, but to be honest, the sound quality is just horrible. It’s time to upgrade your equipment!

  • The History class I look forward to!

Listening in to John and Tom talk about Antietam is enjoyable, entertaining and enlightening. It would be ridiculous to expect a daily podcast with all the work that is done in research, but I sure would love it!

  • Not near the microphone

I listen to this intermittently. The biggest problem is that most of the time some of the speakers sound like they are across the room from the Microphone! I thought after 56 episodes this would have been solved. Also be careful! When I heard the voice of Mr. Gottfried, I thought I was listening to Dana Carvey do Chuck Schumer.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tom Clemens talks Antietam preservation and the McClellan HQ debate
Q: Can you start by giving us a little bit of an update of where SHEP is, what has recently happened, and where are we going?
Clemens describes the property acquisitions near Harper's Ferry Road in partnership with the American Battlefield Trust, plans to move or clear buildings to reveal the battlefield view, hopes for a future boundary adjustment, and ongoing efforts to protect surrounding land through collaboration with preservation groups and adjacent properties.
Cannons, maps and memory: Live from the Antietam Institute
Q: What makes the Antietam field guide different from the Gettysburg guide in terms of story selection and focus?
The Antietam guide emphasizes new-to-me stories and diverse geographies, with a stronger nod to individual soldiers and local perspectives, whereas the Gettysburg book relied more on established narratives and familiar figures; the Antietam work aims to be more narrative-driven across multiple vignettes.
Cannons, maps and memory: Live from the Antietam Institute
Q: Carol, how did the leadership narrative of the Union Army at Antietam emerge given four consecutive commanders?
The panel suggests that the strength was deep but not a single 'home run' leader, and that the real takeaway is the ongoing development of leadership through a challenging campaign, with potential for Meade, Hooker, and others to mature in subsequent battles.
Mapping Antietam: Aaron Holley's GPS meets historic cartography
Q: Does this exist for other battlefields, perhaps Gettysburg, and is there a model to follow for expanding this work?
Aaron says the methods are transferable and envisions applying the same 3D terrain and viewshed analyses to Gettysburg and other fields, acknowledging the steep learning curve but highlighting the potential to create similar GIS-based, three-dimensional battlefield reconstructions.
Mapping Antietam: Aaron Holley's GPS meets historic cartography
Q: Can we just ask, how does one get interested in this slice of Civil War history?
Aaron explains his lifelong fascination with Civil War history, his forestry and biometric background, and how those skills naturally led him to map-making and georeferencing historic battlefields, turning maps into usable tools for researchers and enthusiasts.
