  • If you love the story, you will love this podcast-

Amazing podcast. Knowledgeable guests; Matt is an excellent host with tremendous interviewing skills. I’ve been an amateur student of the Civil War for many years- yet I still learn fascinating details and nuances with each listen. My only regret is being a latecomer- but as a patron I have access to many hours of past programs to enjoy!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ask A Gettysburg Guide #125- The 1st Minnesota - with Ralph Siegel | America250
Q: Why are casualty numbers so contested for the First Minnesota?
Casualty figures vary by source (Lochren, Fox, Moe, etc.), and the numbers depend on how you count those wounded later, those captured, and those who died later; thus, historians warn against accepting a single fixed figure and stress the broader lesson about how numbers can mislead interpretations of valor.
Ask A Gettysburg Guide #126 | Lockwood's Brigade with Stuart Dempsey | America250
Q: What was Lockwood's leadership style during Gettysburg and how was he viewed by Ruger and Williams?
Lockwood was seen as capable and pragmatic, often deferring to the more experienced Ruger in the division arrangement, while maintaining an independent brigade command when needed; overall his conduct was viewed positively by Greene and Williams, though the rapid shift in command created some friction.
Raising the White Flag - David Silkenat
Q: What inspired you to explore the topic of surrender in the Civil War?
The idea that the Civil War had many surrenders that shaped its course, not just at famous sites but across many engagements, suggested a pattern worth analyzing to understand decisions, norms, and consequences.
Ask A Gettysburg Guide #124 | Compensation in Civil War Armies | LBG Rich Kohr
Q: What was the mechanism for paying soldiers in the field?
Paymasters would muster units for pay, paying by company, with deductions for lost equipment and provisions, and sometimes prisoners or hospital patients still being paid, with back-pay if needed after events.
Ask A Gettysburg Guide #124 | Compensation in Civil War Armies | LBG Rich Kohr
Q: How did soldiers send money home or have money forwarded?
Soldiers could use allotments to send part of their pay home, and wealthier officers could forward money via Adams Express or other forwarding services in or near depots and rail hubs.
