  • Very Quiet

I guess this is done in cahoots with the ECW because the recording volume is set VERY low. I suggest downloading it and then import into GarageBand; up the volume at least twice. Then you can send it to your phone to listen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Capital has Fallen! The Philadelphia Campaign from Brandywine to Valley Forge
Q: How did Valley Forge influence French involvement and the broader trajectory of the war?
Valley Forge illustrated American resilience and organizational capacity, contributing to a narrative of perseverance that helped persuade France to ally with the United States; the army's improved discipline and logistics under Steuben and Greene fed into the broader strategic shift that culminated in French entry and the eventual alliance that transformed the war.
The Capital has Fallen! The Philadelphia Campaign from Brandywine to Valley Forge
Q: What were the key factors on the American side that allowed Washington to preserve the army after Brandywine and Brandywine-related engagements?
Washington leveraged disciplined retreat, effective delaying actions by Green and Morgan, and timely reinforcement from the north to prevent a complete collapse; his ability to maintain unit cohesion, despite setbacks and command tensions, kept the army intact to fight another day at Germantown and later at Valley Forge.
The Capital has Fallen! The Philadelphia Campaign from Brandywine to Valley Forge
Q: Dan, why did the British decide to move in from the south towards Philadelphia instead of pressing Burgoyne's forces with a more direct approach from the north?
The British aimed to strike at Philadelphia to take the rebel capital and undermine political leadership, even if it meant a longer, more awkward route; internal disagreements and miscommunications among Howe, Clinton, Burgoyne, and their staff made coordinated action difficult, but the intent was to separate Washington from his northern allies and destabilize the Continental government's administrative center.
81: Saving the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield
Q: What role did the Guilford Battleground Company have in helping to preserve this site?
The Guilford Battleground Company raised funds and partnered with local governments and individuals to purchase and preserve the Hoskins Farm for future generations.
81: Saving the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield
Q: Why is the Hoskins Farm important on March 15th, 1781?
The Hoskins Farm was located between the British and American forces during the battle and witnessed significant events that shaped the outcome.
