  • THIS podcast.

I love this podcast. I grew up skateboarding in the 80s and into the 90s. I still have a skateboard today I’m 46. I really enjoyed the episodes with Jesse Paez and Nik Freitas. I’m from Hanford. Those guys would come to our skate park and we would just sit down. It was so rad to finally have our own skate park. Get Tom Knox on the pod!!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

RAY MEYER Talkin' Freestyle Skateboarding and Growing up in
Q: Can you describe the moment you saw a defining trick or event that changed your view of skating?
Seeing trucks and boards evolve, and the first time I witnessed a one-foot spin and the Casper-esque tricks, showed me that the sport could expand beyond simple flat-ground freestyles into rail and ramp possibilities.
RAY MEYER Talkin' Freestyle Skateboarding and Growing up in
Q: What was the trajectory from local contests to larger platforms like Thrasher?
Contests at Fort Mason and Cow Palace helped propel me into a broader scene, with magazines like Thrasher shaping who was seen as 'hot' and which tricks were trending, while sponsorships from CalPrecision and Skateboards Unlimited provided support.
RAY MEYER Talkin' Freestyle Skateboarding and Growing up in
Q: How did you first get involved in freestyle skating in the Bay Area?
I started with a Bonsai board and then moved through teachers and friends I met while skating Ninth Avenue; I quickly fell into freestyling and contest culture as it happened around me, influenced by local shops and publications.
CHRIS GREGSON Talkin' Swampfest vs Disneyland | part 2
Q: What's the most scared you've ever been while filming a slam?
The Lizzie Armanto mega ramp slam stands out as the scariest moment, because it looked like a life-threatening situation and required rapid, careful response to get the skater to safety without delaying essential care.
CHRIS GREGSON Talkin' Swampfest vs Disneyland | part 2
Q: How do you decide when to wear a helmet as a filmer, given the risks around BMX and skate events?
Helmet use depends on the skate discipline and risk level; I wear a helmet for vert or mega ramp where the risk is higher, but for bowls I might skate without one if I feel in control and within my comfort zone.
