This podcast is amazing. I learned about it in the week junior my neighbor gives me after she has read it every week. Your books inspired me to write my own and each episode is helping me throughout the process. Kelly your books are so full of understanding and teaching I can not stop reading them. And Kate these books are so beautiful and have so much thought into. Thank you both so much.

  • Love this

My ten year old and I listen to the episodes! They are so much fun and informative! We liked hearing that Katie’s fingers hurt from typing so she walks her dog on a leash hooked on her ankle! The short episodes are great length for my ten year old!

Would you saw that you have good hand writing or bad? Is there a reason for a sad book or not? This question is for both of you by the way.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why are people mean?
Q: Why are people mean?
People are often mean because they've experienced fear or hurt themselves, and understanding that backstory can help you respond with empathy rather than sinking into the cycle of meanness.
Should you use AI to write?
Q: Why did Opal meet Winn-Dixie at the Winn-Dixie store?
Opal's meeting with Winn-Dixie stems from Opal's childhood memories and a wish-fulfillment moment tied to a familiar place from her hometown, which Kate and Kelly highlight as a beloved, personal origin of the story element.
How do you deal with jealousy?
Q: How do we deal with jealousy when you're jealous of someone else's skill or success, or if people are jealous of yours?
The idea is to reframe jealousy as a positive force by recognizing that love and success are not finite resources; focus on your own path, learn from others, and celebrate others' achievements to unlock your own growth.
How do you decide on what to write?
Q: How do you decide on what to write?
The decision often starts with a strong image or an emotion that lingers, which gets captured in a notebook. The process is patient and iterative, carrying prompts across notebooks until the voice of the image reveals what the story needs. Writing then becomes a way to unpack feelings and make sense of experiences.
Are you a planner or a pantser?
Q: Does Winn-Dixie have fleas?
The hosts discuss reader questions about Winn-Dixie, noting that Winn-Dixie may have had fleas initially, but Opal helps keep him flea-free; the point is that readers are deeply invested in the story, which underscores the realism and affection readers feel for the characters.
