  • The Librarians

The episode of the Librarians was the first podcast that made me cry. Librarians are truly unsung heroes, and to listen to the verbal and online abuse she has encountered was heartbreaking. Keep up the great work - you are truly making a difference in the lives of all of us - especially children. It is of the utmost importance to protect our first amendment rights, and you are leading the charge - thank you!

  • English teachers!

Perhaps consider interviewing the people who are often the first to awaken the love of reading: English teachers. Middle school. High School. Lots of undersung heroes out there.

Also-would suggest Katie be kinder and less insulting to her father. Our parents are only with us so long. The near constant mean teasing is tiresome.

I look forward to listening every Thursday. Richard Osman and Virginia Evans are my new favorite authors. Thank you, Kate and Charlie 😊⭐️

Elizabeth Strout Tries Something New
Q: When did he first visit you?
She describes Artie appearing in her thoughts after she received obituaries that inspired his name, with the character gradually taking shape as she explored how a seemingly ordinary man might reveal deeper truths over time.
Elizabeth Strout Tries Something New
Q: Did you write the rest of the book in order as well? You did.
Yes, Strout says she wrote the book largely in order and that starting with Artie's initial questions about life allowed her to pull the narrative forward into the life he builds with his wife and son, shaping the book's forward motion.
Elizabeth Strout Tries Something New
Q: Tell us about him.
Strout explains that Artie Dam is a midlife teacher who feels alienated from his family but becomes the lens through which she examines what it means to grow up and understand others; she deliberately crafts him as an ordinary, approachable figure to explore universal questions about perception and connection.
Jason Reynolds on Music, Reading and Writing
Q: You write for young adults. Why is that so important?
Reynolds argues that writing for young readers helps build brain power and critical thinking, and that a larger literacy skill set equips people to listen more carefully and discern truth, while also ensuring a pipeline of informed, capable adults.
Why Are Boys Falling Behind On Reading?
Q: Is the reading gap between boys and girls biological or cultural in origin?
The guest explains that the gaps are not innate or biological; they vary across countries and are influenced by social and cultural contexts, suggesting room to change through education and policy.
