  • The Librarians

The episode of the Librarians was the first podcast that made me cry. Librarians are truly unsung heroes, and to listen to the verbal and online abuse she has encountered was heartbreaking. Keep up the great work - you are truly making a difference in the lives of all of us - especially children. It is of the utmost importance to protect our first amendment rights, and you are leading the charge - thank you!

  • English teachers!

Perhaps consider interviewing the people who are often the first to awaken the love of reading: English teachers. Middle school. High School. Lots of undersung heroes out there.

Also-would suggest Katie be kinder and less insulting to her father. Our parents are only with us so long. The near constant mean teasing is tiresome.

  • Welcoming, Reliable, and Simply the Best

Kate and Charlie consistently recommend present titles and authors worth reading. Their interviews are like warm, thoughtful conversations with trusted friends. I look forward to listening every Thursday. Richard Osman and Virginia Evans are my new favorite authors. Thank you, Kate and Charlie 😊⭐️

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ann Patchett and an Audience!
Q: How did you come up with the mechanics of the car accident and the gravity of that scene?
I used a Hot Wheels car to model positions in the car, counting inches to map feet on the wheel well and the height of the girl, a method that helped me visualize the sequence in a concrete way.
Ann Patchett and an Audience!
Q: Best piece of advice you've ever received about writing.
Don't give up. Don't silence yourself. The distinction between writers who continue to create art and those who don't is simply that they don't give up and keep going.
Jesmyn Ward on Pain and Beauty
Q: What best expresses what you want to say, fiction or non?
It depends on what I'm trying to express; I move between fiction, memoir, and creative nonfiction to tell the truth as I understand it, tailoring the form to the moment's need.
Laurie Frankel, Impossible Realism and Caroline Bicks’ Childhood Ghosts
Q: How did you approach the dialogue between a popular, genre author like Stephen King and a Shakespearean scholar in the archives?
The interview explores how King's drafts and marginalia reveal a meticulous craft, and how a Shakespearean lens helps illuminate the rhythm and sound of his prose.
Laurie Frankel, Impossible Realism and Caroline Bicks’ Childhood Ghosts
Q: Did you know all along how you would end the book, or were there multiple endings considered?
There were many endings written; she explored numerous versions before settling on an ending that felt earned and true to the characters' development.
