  • Well done!

Very good podcast. The host, Emily Baucum, is excellent, and the Alamo staff members who join are impressive. Giving Justice Ken Wise’s Wise About Texas podcast (which is outstanding, by the way) some competition!

  • Very informative with a great host

I’ve live in San Antonio for about 5 years and I’m learning so much. Schools should play this podcast to help kids learn this important history. Also, Emily is a fantastic interviewer!

  • The shrine

I am 80 and retired in LA. I was born in Houston a 4th generation Texan. I’ve visited the Alamo since I was 10 years old. The Church was not so urbanized then and we could see the River which was surrounded by sandy shores. The Alamo is a shrine to me. Each time I enter the church I am as cold as the inside air. I feel the sacrifice that early Texans made for us. It is truly a shrine of ideals of freedom that we are duty bound to defend and keep

    God bless Texas.

  • From a relatives perspective.

Having grown up in west Texas, the stories of the Alamo were instilled in me from a young age. My great grandmother did family genealogy, and I was told from a very young age that we were related to Davy Crockett. I always believed it but never had the evidence as both my grandfather, and both great grandparents died when I was young. So I just grew up with the assumption that it was correct. A couple of years ago I got into the family genealogy myself, and I ended up discovering the connection ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Treaties Of Velasco
Q: What kind of welcome home did Santa Anna receive when he returned to Veracruz, Mexico?
His reception was lukewarm and distant; he was blamed for San Jacinto's defeat and faced a reception that treated him as a man who failed, rather than as a victorious leader, which underlines how Velasco's negotiations were only one part of a larger political narrative.
Battle Cries Through History
Q: What's the origin story behind Come and Take It?
The phrase is tied to the Texan Revolution and Gonzales, but later scholarship notes limited contemporary mentions; it became emblematic through the flag and the broader push of Texan independence, reinforcing the idea that the cry encapsulates a broader struggle for rights and autonomy.
Ask The Alamo's Archaeologist
Q: Do you find artifacts related to the Battle of the Alamo, or are most of them from a different time period?
Artifacts directly linked to the battle are found, identified using stratigraphy, diagnostic features, and other dating methods to place them within the battle timeframe.
The Texas General Land Office
Q: What makes the Alamo experience change in this new phase?
The interview highlights the new visitor center, museum, and the overall upgrade to make the Alamo a more immersive, historically contextualized experience for visitors, with emphasis on preserving the building and incorporating historical artifacts like the Travis letter.
The Texas General Land Office
Q: Tell us about the role of the land office in relation to the Alamo plan.
Buckingham explains the Land Office's stewardship of state lands, the education-centered Alamo project funded by the legislature, and how the map program and archives support preservation and public education.
