We are back! Sorry for the gaps. Our new shop makes us very busy these days! But we have something rare and special. A wine from the Picos de Europa mountains in Cantabria. Vino de la Tierra de Liébana! Angel Moreno's Mencía from the peaks. Weird rig... more
It's almost Christmas! So to end off the year prior to this festive we are heading back to the big boy himself: La Rioja. Things have been changing in the last couple of years. So with a bottle of Brunes by Bodegas Vivanco in our glasses, we chat sin... more
A slightly differente episode today. We decide to celebrate International Cab Franc Day by diving into the life and history of this French grape. Or...is it French? We sample a bottle of Abadal Franc from the tiny Catalan DO of Pla de Bagès!
Yee haw and giddy up! This week Roque and Luke head down to the depths of Almeria, towards the long coast of southeast Spain to a winery making a delicious red in the middle of cowboy country. Sierra Almagrera is a blended tinto from a region not usu... more
Today Roque and Luke talk vertical tastings, wine events, and enjoy a very rare bottle of one of the finest sweet wines they've ever tried. Dulce Salmor from the Viña Frontera COOP on the tiny island of El Hierro. Truly amazing stuff!
That's right, Spain has recently welcomed into the Denominación de Origen family another new regulated wine region. Eagle-eyed listeners might recognise the name as this used to be a VT. But not any more. So we crack a bottle of Phoenix by Quinta de ... more
Time for a weird grape double edition. Huelva, an episode we have been to before years ago, known for its sherry-esque wines and sweet vinos. We have a bottle of Líbero, a fascinating 50/50 blend of two grapes only found in this Andalusian hideaway: ... more
Regions, grapes, statistics, numbers, facts and figures; over the last few years we've covered a lot. So, over a bottle of very alcoholic red wine (Loxarel OPS) this week we have decided to compile all the main stats of the Spanish wine world. ALL of... more
I must mention that the podcast has been quite informative and mostly enjoyable mmm but it's def not suitable for everyone due to several problematic intrusive thoughts from the hosts. In one episode (Garnacha grave variety I believe), there's a warning about increasing Chinese wine production, revealing an orientalist bias from one of the hosts. I just finished listening another one (Vino de Pitarra) where the other host makes insensitive remarks about the People of Extremadura calling them the... more
Amazing resource in Spanish wine. Love every episode.
Funny, irreverent, cheeky, informative: there aren’t enough adjectives to adequately describe these episodes but the guys have really invigorated my passion to discover Spanish wines and made me a customer of their shop. Great job Roque and Luke!
Shite
I am working my way through the back catalogue and loving every minute! p.s. I live in Murcia, I don’t play golf nor live in an expat enclave and I drink too much Machoman and Juan Gil plata!!
Stumbled across this while studying for the US based Spanish Wine scholar qualification. (Which is almost as geeky as Luke, but a lot less interesting, and certainly less entertaining.) In fact listening to these two guys was about the only thing that kept me smiling through the Spanish Wine Scholar studying period! Luke is for Spanish wine what Jamie Oliver once was for British food (a long time ago). As in very well versed, totally onto it, but also at last completely devoid of pomposity. An... more
Great supplemental material for those studying in the Spanish wine scholar or WSET level 3 program.
Muchas Gracias to both of you ! I absolutely love your podcasts. I visit Spain frequently and only passed through Madrid this June (2019) on my motorbike. I rode my bike down through the centre of Spain, from San Sabastian to Malaga via Madrid & Cadiz. Pity I was not aware of your shop off plaza mayor. I rode my bike through the town of Haro and La Rioja region. Had a ball in the town of peñafiel where I was given a personal tour of a small winery and I was also taken in the owners car up into ... more
So informative and SO fun!
So much about Spanish wine, such a great podcast.
Since I discovered these 2 funny still knowledgeable guys everytime I drive to work I turn on their podcast and learn on the way. Real pleasure. Thanks for sharing!
I have learned lots about Spanish wine from this podcast. And as a bonus the podcast is lighthearted and silly in a very entertaining way. I look forward to a tasting experience when I am next in Madrid.
Informative and funny!
Luke and Roque wrap their friendship round you and take you on a journey through Spanish Wine. Booze yourway through flavours, grapes, regions and a whole raft of jovial chat... whilst outsourcing the liver strain to the producers. Recommend to anyone with a keen interest in Spain, wine, food and good humour.
Sparkling conversation from Luke and Roque telling you all you need to know about Spanish wines. An excellent pairing of interesting information and full-bodied banter. Particularly enjoy learning about wines from unusual locations. I only wish you could taste the wines too!
