  • Wonderful, intentional tool for studying scripture

Pastor Appel does a wonderful job of asking just the right questions of his guests to keep the show conversational while highly informative. As a Lutheran pastor myself, it’s a wonderful blessing to hear the voices of friends from around the country as they provide sound Biblical teaching and, as a result, a podcast I feel confident directing my congregation to utilize for further study of God’s word!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matthew 10:5-15: Preaching Peace to Lost Sheep
Q: How should we think about the signs that accompany the proclamation of the Kingdom of Heaven in today's church?
The hosts reflect that signs like healing and exorcism were signs of the Kingdom for the apostles, but in the church today the primary focus remains the preaching of the gospel, with signs serving to testify to the Word rather than replace it.
Matthew 10:5-15: Preaching Peace to Lost Sheep
Q: Pastor, talk to us about this call that you have as a missionary.
The guest explains his May call to be a missionary in Spandallum, Germany, highlighting the English-speaking mission and the presence of American communities, tying it to the text's theme of going to the lost sheep of Israel and the broader mission to reach people with the gospel.
Matthew 6:25-34: Freedom from Worry
Q: How does Jesus' teaching about worry relate to the Lord's Prayer and daily bread?
Prayer frames our trust in the Father; seeking the kingdom and daily bread are coordinated, so we first pursue God's kingdom and righteousness, then the Father provides the rest, teaching us to pray and trust rather than to panic.
Matthew 6:25-34: Freedom from Worry
Q: Pastor Johnson, talk to us about the context in which we find ourselves at the end of Matthew 6.
We are in the Sermon on the Mount, with a focus on the three pillars of Jewish piety, and now a contrast between trusting God versus trusting wealth, leading toward the reassurance that the Father provides for his children.
Matthew 7:24-29: On Christ, the Solid Rock, I Stand
Q: Why should I hear the Word of Jesus and do it according to this passage?
Because true wisdom comes from trusting in Christ and living out His Word, not from mere external compliance; faith expresses itself in obedient action rooted in a foundational relationship with God.
