  • Wonderful, intentional tool for studying scripture

Pastor Appel does a wonderful job of asking just the right questions of his guests to keep the show conversational while highly informative. As a Lutheran pastor myself, it’s a wonderful blessing to hear the voices of friends from around the country as they provide sound Biblical teaching and, as a result, a podcast I feel confident directing my congregation to utilize for further study of God’s word!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matthew 5:3-12: Blessed Are You
Q: Talk to us about the context in which we find ourselves in Matthew's Gospel as we begin the Sermon on the Mount.
The Sermon on the Mount sits after Jesus' preparation and baptism, introducing a new pattern of instruction where Jesus teaches about the Kingdom of Heaven, beginning with the Beatitudes as a friendly, invitational proclamation rather than a stern, law-oriented demand.
Matthew 3:13-17: The Crimson Flood Heals Our Ills
Q: Why does Jesus insist on being baptized by John if he is without sin?
The guests explain that Jesus' baptism fulfills all righteousness and signals the beginning of his public mission, while also symbolically carrying the sin of the world so that believers receive righteousness through him.
Matthew 4:12-22: The Light Dawns in Galilee
Q: What is the significance of Jesus beginning his ministry in Galilee according to the text?
It fulfills Isaiah's prophecy about the light dawning in a region of darkness and marks the beginning of Jesus' authoritative preaching that expands from Israel to the nations, setting up the Great Commission later in the gospel.
Psalm 140: The LORD is the Strength of My Salvation
Q: Take us into verse four.
Pastor Squire explains the shift in focus from deliverance to describing the threats that trap one's feet, highlighting the psalm's move from petition to vivid imagery of nets and cords as a literary device.
The Reign of Heaven Stands Near - Matthew 1:1: The Genesis of Jesus
Q: What is the significance of Matthew 1:1's wording for understanding the rest of the Gospel?
It functions as a framing device that hints at Matthew's purpose: to present Jesus as the fulfillment of Jewish messianic expectations through Davidic and Abrahamic lineage, while also setting up the broad, universal scope of the Gospel to all nations.
