  • So heavenly minded, it’s (nearly) of no earthly use.

I’m very liturgically motivated. I love my hymnal, love Tradition etc. but in all honesty, many of the guests on this show are teetering on idolatry, often suggesting that these aren’t merely wise customs, but rather necessary rules and doctrines- and that if we only started doing Latin mass, or had more icons or started celebrating Sexigesma Sunday “the way the church fathers did” (or something) then our churches would be PACKED and all our problems would simply go away.

    There are indeed GEMS... more

  • My Favorite Podcast!

Aside from the day(s) I get to go to church, the day the weekly OTL episode posts is the best day of the week 😂👌

I have been Lutheran my whole life but am new to the LCMS; this podcast is scratching my itch both to learn more about the people who make up my church body and to regularly contemplate the Lutheran confessions and other relevant topics.

Plus it is great to have high quality, solid, authoritative content to share with nonlutheran friends when they are wondering what I believe/why... more

  • For Young Lutherans, Too

As a Lutheran student in high school, I appreciate hearing about the Lutheran difference in a town of mostly evangelicals. OTL has helped me develop my faith and has led me to pursue being a deaconess!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bishop Torkild Masvie: A Confessional Lutheran Renewal in Europe
Q: What role do the seminaries play in sustaining the confessional church you lead?
They provide critical pastor formation and a yearly ordination flow; the two-year supplementary program in Oslo and Bergen feeds into Fort Wayne and St. Louis exchanges, helping expose Norwegian students to LCMS doctrinal standards and to guard against liberal theology.
Dr. John Rasmussen: How the Small Catechism Forms and Defends Christian Faith
Q: How should catechesis be integrated with preaching to be most effective?
Catechesis should inform preaching so sermons build on a cohesive Christian story, connecting commandments, creed, and prayers to everyday life and challenging listeners to see God at the center of all things.
Dr. John Rasmussen: How the Small Catechism Forms and Defends Christian Faith
Q: What distinguishes Lutheran catechesis from other denominations in its approach to apologetics?
Lutheran catechesis emphasizes the bondage of the will, the need for the Holy Spirit to open faith, and a narrative framework (Commandments, Creed, Lord's Prayer) that grounds Christian truth in the gospel rather than relying solely on human rational persuasion.
Tracy Rugg: Why She Left the Homosexual Lifestyle
Q: Did you ever encounter this subject being talked about in church growing up that you remember?
Not that I remember; it could have been, but I would have been uncomfortable.
Tracy Rugg: Why She Left the Homosexual Lifestyle
Q: What would you want to speak and say to them?
Be in the Word. Be in prayer. Take it to the Lord.
