  • Authentic listening

I find this podcast extraordinary interesting as a keen history buff.

However the actual quality of listening is like hearing 2 blokes with a paper bag over their heads in a cupboard podcasting.

Surely this production can be improved!

  • Fun and Educational

I first found this podcast because of the abdication series, which I found incredibly interesting and then listened to the rest of the available episodes. If you enjoy learning about the Royals I would recommend this podcast as it come at the topic from an interesting perspective. Also, Streeter’s book on Prince Arthur was excellent.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The vagaries and history of Royal titles: With Jason Loch
Q: Could Andrew still be Duke of York legally?
Legally he remains the duke unless Parliament acts to revoke it; the current situation relies on instruments and public practice, showing the difference between legal status and social recognition.
The vagaries and history of Royal titles: With Jason Loch
Q: How would you distinguish between HRH, Prince, and Duke in practical terms?
HRH applies to those in the immediate royal circle and is a style; dukedoms and peerages are formal titles with potential inheritance and seats, but their use can be modified by royal instruments; the distinction is both historical and functional, with social recognition playing a key role.
Royal roundup: Sept 2025 - one Donald, two Dukes, three Duchesses and 5000 years of female monarchy
Q: What are the key themes in Women Who Ruled the World?
The book explores themes of patriarchy impacting female rulers across history, their combat against dynastic turmoil, and the historical inadequacy of terminology for women in power.
Royal roundup: Sept 2025 - one Donald, two Dukes, three Duchesses and 5000 years of female monarchy
Q: What can you tell us about the recent royal events in September?
There were notable events including the Duke of Edinburgh celebrating the railways' anniversary, public engagements of the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the sad passing of the Duchess of Kent.
Q&A: the Abdication crisis
Q: What are your thoughts on whether the events of 1936 should be called a crisis or relief?
It should arguably be both, as it is a relief to have had a monarch who was not aligned with fascist sympathies during the upcoming war, but the term 'crisis' also captures the gravity of the situation at the time.
