  • Thoughtful, But Lacking in Biblical Clarity

If you’ve been hurt by the church, I’m so sorry. This podcast asks genuinely thoughtful and compassionate questions. You'll hear a lot about mercy, justice, and inclusion—deeply important themes. But I found it lacking in biblical clarity. Holiness, obedience, and a biblical view of marriage are often dismissed. Grace is emphasized, but truth can feel morally relative. The title Reclaiming My Theology is telling—it leans more on personal experience than on historic Christian belief. For a perspe... more

  • Absolute feast of wisdom

Important, necessary, wise, and relevant! Anything Brandi shares, whether it’s in writing or spoken on this podcast, I just want to go back and study, reflect, and apply. She is challenging in the best way, not only intellectually (and there is plenty of that) but also practically. My thanks to Brandi for what you offer to the world in your work and in your being.

  • Love the podcast

Thank you for this amazing podcast that helps me understand a lot more about faith, religion, politics, in a way that is real, relatable, challenging, and truly inspiring. It has helped me to reflect on growing up in a small evangelical church in a small Baltic country that was a sweet spot for American missionaries in the post-Soviet 1990s; and on what it means to unlearn hurtful and wrong interpretations/uses of the Bible while still keeping my faith in God, and actually understanding God’s lo... more

  • Love this podcast. Brandi is an extremely smart and insightful host. Her analysis of toxic theologies (along with her guests) is always on the mark. But along with the justified anger, there is generosity and compassion. Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

...From Empire: Authoritarianism and Fascism w/ Jarrod McKenna
Q: How do you stay human and soft and tender in a world that is increasingly unethical, increasingly violent, increasingly distorting the way of Jesus?
We need stories that produce conversations that connect us back to our humanity, fostering joy and understanding rather than engaging in authoritarianism or violence. We must open ourselves to community and compassion while living out Jesus's teachings.
...From Empire: Authoritarianism and Fascism w/ Jarrod McKenna
Q: Can we start just broad? What is authoritarianism? How can we be thinking about that concept?
Authoritarianism involves centralization of power, limited freedom, and a limitation of ideology, often with selective rule of law. It manifests in concentrated power in leaders, suppression of dissent, and does not allow for pluralism or civil rights.
...from Empire: Soul Care and Empire w/ Hailey Mitsui
Q: Can you give us a definition of what we are talking about when we talk about the soul?
Hailey described the soul as what makes us fully human, our capacity to connect with other people and things and contains our wholeness.
...From Empire: How We Learn Empire w/ Mariko Clark
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the work that you do?
I recently released my first book, The Book of Belonging, which focuses on more diverse, inclusive Bible stories for children.
...From Empire: How We Learn Empire w/ Mariko Clark
Q: What does it mean to be you?
It means reflecting on how my experiences have shaped me and how they serve me now in my work as I promote my book.
