  • Compelling, even from the other side

I’m (mostly) on the other side of the math-teaching spectrum from Zach, but I listen to every episode. The ideas are laid out clearly and the guests are super experienced. Even when I think they’re getting things wrong, I can’t argue with the quality of the conversation.

  • Literal Fountain of Educational Information

Zach’s podcast is the perfect balance of fascinating insights and companionable presentation. He has opened my eyes to so much of the Science of Learning with brilliant researchers sharing their work in-person. His Direct Instruction foray was mind-blowing and opened up huge areas of interest for me. My biggest problem is keeping up with the life-changing insights - I almost always want to buy a book after listening to him and his guests and they never fail to disappoint. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S5E02: Linda Diamond & Paige Pullen on Connecting Learning, Literacy, and Instruction
Q: If a school leader asked you, what's one thing I should start doing differently tomorrow to support stronger literacy instruction, how would you answer?
Implement a high-quality instructional framework in the school that provides ongoing professional learning and support to educators.
S4E38: Nathan Lang-Raad on Learning Science and Artificial Intelligence
Q: Do you think AI will be useful for the more experienced teachers, or is it really only for bringing up teachers who are low on time and low on resources?
Everyone can benefit from AI, but there is a spectrum with those who are experts using AI differently than novice users.
S4E37: John Tanner on Tests, College, and Cheating Scandals
Q: What do you think is needed in these kind of tumultuous times to kind of move the school system forward and actually improve outcomes for kids?
We really have the knowledge on how to teach and what works. We need to stop fighting about effective teaching methods and start implementing them.
S4E28: Jonathan Regino on Curriculum Evaluation and Math Coaching
Q: What do you say to people that just sort of outright just reject the idea of even going down this road and getting these materials?
Materials make money for publishers, and teachers should be able to teach creatively and make lesson plans without relying on them.
S4E27: Richard Mayer on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning
Q: Can you speak about guided instruction versus discovery learning?
Guided discovery is more effective for most learners than pure discovery, as learners often need help to reach the correct conclusions.
