  • Compelling, even from the other side

I’m (mostly) on the other side of the math-teaching spectrum from Zach, but I listen to every episode. The ideas are laid out clearly and the guests are super experienced. Even when I think they’re getting things wrong, I can’t argue with the quality of the conversation.

  • Literal Fountain of Educational Information

Zach’s podcast is the perfect balance of fascinating insights and companionable presentation. He has opened my eyes to so much of the Science of Learning with brilliant researchers sharing their work in-person. His Direct Instruction foray was mind-blowing and opened up huge areas of interest for me. My biggest problem is keeping up with the life-changing insights - I almost always want to buy a book after listening to him and his guests and they never fail to disappoint. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S5E20: Christopher Such on Action Steps for Reading and the Latest Literacy Debates
Q: What should coaches and teachers do next after phonics to improve comprehension and engagement with texts?
Focus on three goals: fluent reading through scaffolded decoding, meaningful reading experiences with texts to build broad language understanding, and engaging students in deeper text discussions to develop critical reading and personal identity as readers.
S5E20: Christopher Such on Action Steps for Reading and the Latest Literacy Debates
Q: How do linguistic phonics and traditional phonics differ, and can they coexist in a classroom?
They are extremes of how curriculums can be organized (speech-to-print vs print-to-speech), but in practice there are middle grounds and blends that can combine the strengths of both approaches while focusing on teacher modeling and practice.
S5E20: Christopher Such on Action Steps for Reading and the Latest Literacy Debates
Q: What is the core debate in phonics and how should we think about escape velocity in literacy instruction?
Escape velocity represents reaching a sufficient decoding habit, but instruction should continue with scaffolded reading experiences and occasional supports to address those who need more than the initial hours.
S5E17: Femi Adeniran on Explicit Math Instruction and Coaching for Better Math Teaching
Q: How do you not begin a math lesson? What would be an example of a way that doesn't take advantage of some of these affordances?
The worst way to begin a math lesson is one filled with distractions with no focus on math, where students aren't even thinking about learning at the start.
S5E15: Barbara Oakley on Constructivism vs. Learning Science
Q: What excites you most about teaching and learning in the next decade?
Bringing insights from neuroscience to education will improve learning effectiveness and excitement.
