  • Life changing for Parents!

Anna Stokke’s Chalk and Talk podcast has been life-changing for me. As a parent trying to understand why my daughter struggled with math, the podcast helped me finally make sense of how math should actually be taught. Hearing experts discuss evidence-based instruction gave me hope that students like my daughter can succeed when they receive the right kind of teaching. The podcast also led me to educators like Jonathan Regino, whose work has inspired me and helped me see a path forward for my dau... more

  • Voice of Reason in Math Instruction

Anna is fighting the good fight for clear, effective math instruction. Constructivist math is math’s “Whole Language Reading” moment and is harming our kids. Shout it from the mountaintop Anna!

  • A big fan

I can’t wait to listen to the next episode. I learn so much about how to teach — all the things I wish I’d learned in my education degree! I appreciate the frank and direct information and the positive focus on excellence in the teaching and learning of math, without getting bogged down in unnecessary controversy. What a joy to hear Anna Stokke and Anita Archer in conversation. Thank you.

  • Gives me hope and ideas

As another reviewer said common sense, but also, thoroughly grounded in science and research. Anna gets the best guests from around the world. I think it’s a plus as well that she’s in Canada, because in the US much of the discourse around education gets overly political, which is unfortunate. Anna is an actual mathematician and instructor at the college level. She sees what the kids need to be prepared to get upper level courses and be college/university ready. Enough with vibe mathing. Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cognitive load theory and learning math with John Sweller (Ep 67)
Q: When should a teacher move students from worked examples to problem solving?
Once students are sufficiently automatized with the underlying procedures and possess enough prior knowledge, the teacher should shift toward problem solving to promote automaticity and transfer.
Cognitive load theory and learning math with John Sweller (Ep 67)
Q: Can you alter working memory or is it mainly what's in long-term memory that changes?
You can't easily change working memory itself; what changes is the content in long-term memory, which then affects how much you can hold in working memory during a task.
Cognitive load theory and learning math with John Sweller (Ep 67)
Q: So I'm wondering, working memory is limited in the amount it can hold and its duration. Do people vary in that capacity?
The variation is real but hard to measure; it depends on how much long-term memory people have for related material, which reshapes apparent working memory capacity for novel tasks.
Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction with Tom Sherrington (Ep 64)
Q: Who was Barak Rosenshine?
Barak Rosenshine was a history teacher turned researcher who studied effective teaching practices and developed instructional principles based on his findings.
Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction with Tom Sherrington (Ep 64)
Q: What were Rosenshine's principles about?
Rosenshine's principles are a set of instructional strategies that teachers can use to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes, emphasizing evidence-based methods and practical application.
