Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Virtual fencing in Australian beef systems
Q: What was the turning point that convinced you to adopt Holter's virtual fencing, after previously being skeptical?
A late- year meeting with a local sales rep, seeing that the technology could actually perform as promised, plus the strong business case on paper, convinced me to give it a try—first collars went on in February.

Q: Can you walk us through how you set up and adapted the water and fencing infrastructure in the early days of adopting grazing automation?
We rebuilt water infrastructure progressively, started with underground mainlines and hydrants every 150–200 meters, then moved to temporary polywire fencing and eventually integrated Holter collars for automated movement, which reduced the need for constant on-site labor.

Q: Talk us through how containment changed your management of tough seasons and what you saw as the biggest benefit.
Containment became a core investment in 2021, enabling a secure feed bank and the ability to lock sheep away during lean periods. The biggest benefit was the holistic capability to manage feed, lambing, and stocking rate across both livestock and cropping operations, rather than chasing feed in scattered paddocks.
