Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Australian Approach to Balancing Welfare and Economics in Pork Production | Steve Coleman
Q: If you could go back in time and have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?
Peter Singer, discussed as a pivotal but mischaracterized advocate whose ideas shaped Australian animal welfare discourse.
Innovation, Sustainability, and Resilience in Australian Pork | Edwina Beveridge
Q: How has activism affected your operation, and what have you learned from those experiences?
Activism disrupted meetings and spread misinformation, but it also clarified the importance of transparency, proactive communication, and showing real improvements in welfare through documented practices and safety.
Innovation, Sustainability, and Resilience in Australian Pork | Edwina Beveridge
Q: What are some of the things that you and your family have done to innovate over the years, particularly with energy and waste?
We introduced liquid feed sourced from food waste, built an unpacking line to handle varied waste streams, and now feed a large portion of our pigs with recycled foods like dairy by-products. This not only reduces inputs but supports a circular farming model.
Innovation, Sustainability, and Resilience in Australian Pork | Edwina Beveridge
Q: So before we really dive into it, would you, I guess, introduce yourself a little bit about your background and what you do today?
I'm nearly a second-generation pig farmer who grew up in a farming family. I trained as an accountant, which influences our cost-of-production focus, and my husband and I now run part of my parents' pig farm where we manage growth, sustainability, and family succession.
Eliminating PRRS and Protecting the U.S. Herd | Dr. Dustin Oedekoven
Q: Why focus on PED elimination in the shorter term?
PED has been present for a shorter period in the US (about a decade) and there have been meaningful advancements, including a PED clean standard and SHIP, which make PED elimination more achievable in the near term.
