Love the podcast and especially that you talk about boar studs. We don’t get enough attention in the pig industry for such a vital part of production.

In this episode (58) Jay talks about a CASA machine that sounds awesome. Could you please share the make and/or manufacturer? I’d like to upgrade our dinosaur system and could use a good recommendation like the one described. Thanks in advance and keep the discussions coming!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Squeal_0255: Biosecurity Through Truck Wash Sanitation
Q: What are the common failures during disinfection?
Common failures include incomplete disinfection of hard-to-reach areas like behind gates or outside surfaces, missed pig handling equipment, disinfectant dilution due to standing water, and applying disinfectant before trailers are fully trained.
The Squeal_0255: Biosecurity Through Truck Wash Sanitation
Q: What was the motivation to focus on truck washes?
Truck washes are a crucial but often overlooked line of defense; ensuring trailers arrive at farms pathogen-free requires focusing on how contamination can be introduced and removed through the wash, dry, and disinfect steps.
The Squeal_0254: Desired Sire Traits Around the Globe_Part 2
Q: What is one thing you wish more people understood about sire selection in your part of the world?
Understand that index construction is a holistic package; focusing on one trait or trying to chase a single metric ignores the economic and production realities of a system, so producers should consider the full set of traits and the economic signals driving them.
The Squeal_0254: Desired Sire Traits Around the Globe_Part 2
Q: What is the most underrated sire trait in your region?
Several speakers highlighted leg quality and feet/legs as underrated because good conformation supports longevity, reduced culling, and overall profitability, even when those traits are not always heavily measured or valued in some systems.
The Squeal_0250: The Importance of HNS (Heat No Service)_Part 2
Q: How does H&S tie back to the economics of sow productivity by parity three?
H&S contributes to lifetime productivity primarily by improving retention and early-life performance; reducing parity one to parity two losses and enabling more gilts to be rebred and remain in the herd through parity two and parity three delivers the most significant economic benefits.
