Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Designing for the Next Generation of GEO With Swissto12 CEO Emile de Rijk
Q: What role could space data centers and quantum capabilities play in the future of space infrastructure?
Space data centers could leverage sun-powered energy and natural cooling in space to reduce operating costs, but feasibility depends on a favorable economic return; quantum capabilities, especially quantum key distribution via satellites, promise highly secure communications that are difficult to intercept.
Designing for the Next Generation of GEO With Swissto12 CEO Emile de Rijk
Q: How does small GEO fit into space sovereignty and national or regional space strategies?
Small GEO platforms like Hummingsat provide a sovereign backbone that nations can own and operate from their own territories, offering continuous coverage and trust while NGSO constellations complement capacity, enabling a more resilient and controllable space infrastructure.
Designing for the Next Generation of GEO With Swissto12 CEO Emile de Rijk
Q: What is the status of the Hummingsat program and what can we expect in the near term?
We are completing design phases for SES and Viasat missions, with 2026 set for critical design reviews and ramping up assembly, integration, and test activities, aiming for the first satellite launch in 2027 for SES and subsequent launches for Viasat.
Designing for the Next Generation of GEO With Swissto12 CEO Emile de Rijk
Q: How were you able to gain the trust of operators like SES and Viasat to come on board with a different approach?
We invested heavily upfront in trade-offs, designs, and the right balance between payload innovation and overall system reliability, while maintaining open, transparent dialogues with operators about development status and roadmap, which built confidence and commitment.
Designing for the Next Generation of GEO With Swissto12 CEO Emile de Rijk
Q: To kick us off, I kind of want to go talk a little bit about your vision when you started Swissto12. How did you envision disrupting GEO?
We aimed to make GEO faster and more affordable by shrinking the satellites and making the payloads more flexible, challenging the status quo of large, costly, and slow-to-build GEO platforms with a modular, scalable approach that still preserves reliability.
