  • Not as reliable as it once was

I’ve been listening to the WSJ’s news podcasts for a decade now and lately I have noticed a discernible change in their focus.

There is a ‘subject bias’ or a highly narrow ‘cultural focus’ such that, while they still report the facts & news, there is an unavoidable hyperfocus on right & far-right-leaning topics/subjects that, in whole, are not reflective of the tech or business worlds.

I've already unsubscribed from ‘What’s News’ and ‘Tech News Briefing’ may be next.

    **sigh**

  • Now 60% Ads

The Tech Minute is bookended with 30 s-1 min long ads on each end. That’s a lot of ads for a minute long show.

  • Readers aren’t good

Why not replace robotic human readers that have speech and maturity challenges with AI generated voices? Current “hosts” add nothing to the content they are mechanically reading

  • “Inside Duolingo’s…” Episode

In ‘reporting’ on H1B visas, the person said, “Are tech companies going to just say we'll only pay for like certain stars and then the rest will just figure out how to hire a US worker or outsource some other way?” I love the “figure out how to hire Americans” comment. * this guy and his contempt for American workers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meet Max, Russia’s Super-App
Q: What makes Max particularly significant in the context of Russia's approach to the internet and surveillance?
Max is backed by the Kremlin, runs on VK, and is positioned as a way to preinstall a controlled ecosystem—messaging, payments, and services—while enabling state monitoring and data collection across a wide swath of daily life.
Meet Max, Russia’s Super-App
Q: Can you give our listeners a brief rundown of the Maine bill and what it aims to do?
The bill would temporarily freeze construction of large data centers—over 20 megawatts—for more than a year while the state studies environmental and grid impacts, with carveouts under discussion for planned projects.
Meet the Journalist Using AI to Write Stories
Q: What are the major risks for journalists using AI, and how can they mitigate them?
The two main risks are AI hallucinations and erosion of trust; mitigation involves strict fact-checking, human vetting, and treating AI as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for journalistic judgment.
Meet the Journalist Using AI to Write Stories
Q: Why do you think AI-assisted writing leads to better outcomes for consumers in complaints?
Because the way something is said can significantly influence how firms respond, and ChatGPT can help rephrase content to be clearer and more persuasive while still conveying the same underlying information.
Meet the Journalist Using AI to Write Stories
Q: What did your analysis find about adoption of ChatGPT and the efficacy of AI-assisted complaints?
The study found that AI-assisted complaints rose after ChatGPT's release and that such complaints tend to receive more favorable responses, partly due to how the information is presented, with potential benefits for underserved consumers.
