  • Not as reliable as it once was

I’ve been listening to the WSJ’s news podcasts for a decade now and lately I have noticed a discernible change in their focus.

There is a ‘subject bias’ or a highly narrow ‘cultural focus’ such that, while they still report the facts & news, there is an unavoidable hyperfocus on right & far-right-leaning topics/subjects that, in whole, are not reflective of the tech or business worlds.

I've already unsubscribed from ‘What’s News’ and ‘Tech News Briefing’ may be next.

    **sigh**

  • Now 60% Ads

The Tech Minute is bookended with 30 s-1 min long ads on each end. That’s a lot of ads for a minute long show.

  • “Inside Duolingo’s…” Episode

In ‘reporting’ on H1B visas, the person said, “Are tech companies going to just say we'll only pay for like certain stars and then the rest will just figure out how to hire a US worker or outsource some other way?” I love the “figure out how to hire Americans” comment. * this guy and his contempt for American workers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How the Pentagon Standoff is Shaking Up the Fight for AI Talent
Q: So where is all this going? Is this the end of traditional market research?
The industry remains large and slowly evolving, with traditional firms retaining influence, but AI-simulated agents are positioned to augment rather than replace human input, potentially disrupting the model as brands increasingly rely on scalable digital twins for ongoing insights.
How the Pentagon Standoff is Shaking Up the Fight for AI Talent
Q: Belle, what kinds of companies are interested in these AI-simulated people, and what are they doing with them specifically?
Companies like CVS are using AI-simulated people to conduct market research, learn customer sentiments, test store layouts, and replace traditional panels, achieving broader reach, faster feedback, and cost efficiencies while maintaining high relevance to customer experiences.
Apple’s Return to Colorful Styles—And Cheaper Options
Q: How does the color and design revival compare to Apple's past branding moves?
The discussion recalls the iMac and iBook G3 era to illustrate a deliberate return to colorful, distinctive hardware aimed at younger consumers, arguing that Apple is reintroducing personality into its design language to compete on lifestyle and aesthetics as much as on specs.
Apple’s Return to Colorful Styles—And Cheaper Options
Q: Does this signal a broader strategy shift for Apple or reflect the wider market, given the price changes?
The guest explains that Apple is expanding its reach with more affordable devices while continuing to support high-end products, suggesting a dual strategy that broadens the customer base without de-emphasizing premium offerings.
Apple’s Return to Colorful Styles—And Cheaper Options
Q: What was your experience like using them (the new Apple devices)?
Nicole Nguyen describes the devices as visually striking with vibrant color options, but notes practical trade-offs like fewer ports, no backlit keyboard, and a form factor that trades high-end luxury for accessibility, positioning them to attract a younger, budget-conscious audience without compromising the premium image.
