  • quiet intelligence

I discovered this podcast recently and it’s thoughtful approach to a terrible topic gives me hope for humanity. Ahmed Moor is such a empathetic but also tough interviewer— it’s really unusual in the world of political podcasts. Although the podcast focuses on Palestinian issues there’s a broadening of the lens to include the human experience in a way that I find quite profound. It’s hard to describe but I really appreciate it.

  • A response to the episode on the killing of journalists in Gaza

I appreciate Occupied Thoughts very much - thanks for all of your clear-sighted and brave work.

In the latest episode on killings of journalists Peter and the interviewee differed on their analysis of rape during the October 7th Hamas attack. I appreciated the willingness to challenge even those who broadly share one’s same perspective and goals. I just wanted to share a take on this issue I heard Mouin Rabbinni provide at a Busboys and Poets talk last October; he said that many military campaig... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gaza's Disappeared
Q: What are the concrete findings of the report on the disappeared in Gaza?
The findings indicate about 51,000 people went missing during the war period, with around 14,000 to 15,000 still missing today, and that roughly 40% of missing individuals are heads of households, creating a cascade of legal and financial hardships for families, including difficulties obtaining death certificates and managing inheritance.
Israel's Death Penalty law - the evolution of apartheid
Q: What do you think the Supreme Court might do given the current evolution of the case?
There is a cautious hope that the Court might intervene, possibly cancel or revise the law, but it will depend on legal arguments and international pressure; past precedents show the Court can strike down or modify controversial laws, though the current momentum is challenging.
Israel's Death Penalty law - the evolution of apartheid
Q: Can you give me more resolution into that question? How does this affect Palestinians in Israel and the Palestinian territories?
The law confirms discriminatory practice, applying to Palestinians in the West Bank and Palestinian citizens of Israel, while not applying to Jewish settlers, and is part of a broader pattern of apartheid-like legal treatment that has persisted since 1967.
Iran, the DNC, and Prospects for a Ceasefire: A conversation with Matt Duss
Q: Has the United States won or lost this war, and did the Israelis push the United States into it?
The discussion argues that while Israel pressed for action, Washington bears significant responsibility through lobbying and policy choices; the war cannot be attributed to Israel alone, and criticizes the way US policy was steered by Netanyahu's influence and broader hawkish consensus in Washington.
The Gulf Countries and the American Security Umbrella - What Comes Next?
Q: So first, what is CENTCOM?
CENTCOM is the United States Central Command, overseeing military operations in the Middle East with a forward presence that has been integrated into regional defense planning; the guest notes the shift from Europe-oriented to Middle East-oriented command structures and discusses how this affects Gulf security dynamics.
