  • One of the best podcasts for animal trainers

Lauren and Matthias provide incredibly thoughtful insights into animal training and are asking hard questions of very smart people to help benefit the rest of us. Thanks for bringing training discussions I’ve always wanted to have right to my AirPods.

  • Cross-disciplinary conversations made fun!

Two episodes out so far, and off to a strong start! Thank you, Matthias and Lauren, for having what some would see as uncomfortable conversations and staying curious about the training world! I particularly like the combo of horse and dog trainer - that’s something new and will add lots of rich insights I’m looking forward to learning from!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kim Brophey: Welfare of dogs in captivity
Q: What practical models or paths do you envision for improving dog welfare in communities and businesses?
Models like dog walking in small, bonded groups, forest schools for dogs, multi-generational puppy programs, and dogscaping businesses can create social environments and environmental affordances that better meet dogs' natural needs and reduce behavior problems.
Kim Brophey: Welfare of dogs in captivity
Q: What is the overarching responsibility we have to dog welfare beyond the individual dog?
There is a collective, shared responsibility to welfare conditions that extends beyond the individual dog, with culture and industry practices needing reform to improve welfare at scale, guided by welfare science and humility.
Kim Brophey: Welfare of dogs in captivity
Q: Not too bad, not too bad. I hope anybody who's listening is gonna listen to the first episode with you, but if not, who is Kim Brophey?
Kim Brophey is an applied ethologist focusing on dog welfare science, working to understand what dogs do as reflections of their welfare state and to educate professionals in applying welfare science to dog care.
Sarah Stremming: About that yoghurt...
Q: Is the yogurt acting as a punisher?
The hosts and Sarah discuss that punishment should be defined by function (i.e., its effect on the behavior) rather than human feelings, and that yogurt may operate as a contingent alternative rather than a true punisher in many cases; effectiveness depends on the overall reinforcement history and the motivating operations at play.
