  • Incredible content but the audio is so bad I can't listen to it. The volumes of the host and the guests are drastically different combined with the accents it's just a hard listen on top of the audio quality being generally poor from the guest.

  • Fantastic insights

So many lessons to learn from with any guest that is on the show, I’ve genuinely learned at least one thing from each episode I’ve listened to.

Lots of lessons and insights that I’ve used with my own players since listening to the podcast, I would recommend it to any coach that’s looking to further their development no matter what step on the ladder you are.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Stop separating technique from decision-making with Bas Van Baar (FC Twente Academy)
Q: How do you balance in-possession and out-of-possession principles as players develop through ages?
Principles are taught from the player's perspective (with the ball vs away from the ball) and progressively become more team-oriented; early ages focus on individual principles, then shift to team-based, with constant reinforcement of core goals and the ability to solve game situations rather than rely on fixed patterns.
Why Australia Is Producing Better Players Again with Cam Jones
Q: What role does mental conditioning play for young players?
Sports psychology and mindset work are integrated to build grit and resilience, with coaches guiding players through the mental side to perform under pressure and recover quickly from mistakes.
Why Australia Is Producing Better Players Again with Cam Jones
Q: How do you balance technical training with intellectual development?
Maintain a balance by ensuring the ball is touched and skills practiced, but place a heavy emphasis on intellectual development, pattern recognition, and collaborative learning to translate into on-field performance.
Why Australia Is Producing Better Players Again with Cam Jones
Q: What does Spark Football's curriculum look like in practice?
The program starts with biomechanics, then technical work, followed by player pattern recognition exercises, deconstructed box games, and finally game-day application, all within a group context to develop intelligence and decision-making.
Why Australia Is Producing Better Players Again with Cam Jones
Q: How would you assess football development in Australia right now?
Cam explains that development is improving due to a regeneration of talent, evolving pathways, and the inclusion of private academies alongside traditional systems, which together are producing better players and a higher overall level.
