Feels like a Rogan podcast- some good takeaways as you’re having long conversations with players or coaches, but definitely not fact checked so some things are just wrong or biased. Overall tho, I’m really enjoying these. Especially the Michigan ones as I’m learning more about our local clubs. Hope he reaches out to more and more local clubs sporting directors, coaches and players. Keep em coming!

  • Fantastic question!

I’ve always loved soccer, but ended up down the basketball route. I coach high school and haven’t had the opportunity to have some of the discussions but certainly have the same questions often asked here. Jason, you do a great job of asking the things I have often wondered from recruiters to the different ways kids learn and grow in a sport. Fantastic job!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

I Hate Soccer #100 - Alecko Eskandarian, from MLS player to the front office!
Q: Why is MLS Next important for the long-term health of American soccer?
MLS Next brings clarity to a previously fragmented youth landscape, establishes professional standards, and builds a scalable development pipeline. It aims to raise the level of play, improve club professionalism, and ultimately create more players who can earn MLS contracts or be competitive abroad.
I Hate Soccer #100 - Alecko Eskandarian, from MLS player to the front office!
Q: How would you describe your current role and the scope of your work in MLS?
I wear multiple hats, but my core focus is on the pro player pathway—from grassroots to pro contracts—ensuring clubs offer the right pathways for top talents, drafting and distributing contracts, and supporting clubs to retain players in MLS while also facilitating opportunities abroad when appropriate.
I Hate Soccer #93 - Steve Shelton, head women's coach at the University of Detroit Mercy
Q: What led you to Detroit Mercy and how has the program evolved since you arrived?
Shelton explains his path from Concordia Ann Arbor to Ball State and then back to Detroit Mercy, emphasizing building a program with a strong academic emphasis and adapting to roster and competition changes.
I Hate Soccer #90 - Alex Lubyansky, GM and Head Coach of Detroit Metro Football Club
Q: Why did you decide to pursue Detroit Metro FC as a business model outside the traditional pyramid?
Because it's a legalized, scalable way to create value by building a competitive product that people want to watch, not just a club for vanity. It's about ROI, sponsorship, and creating real pathways for players and communities.
I Hate Soccer #91 - Zack Atwood, TheFutbolDoc, founder of Primal Recovery PT and the ACL Institute
Q: What inspired you to start Primal Recovery PT and focus on ACL rehab?
Zack Atwood shares that witnessing peers' ACL journeys during college motivated him to study rehab deeply, with a belief that better outcomes come from comprehensive, data-driven, and brain/body integrated approaches rather than relying on traditional timelines alone.
