  • Thanks!

Occasionally, I search “Melungeon” to see if there’s anything new out there. I did today and found this podcast. I have way more questions than answers, with family (now all gone) that either refused to discuss family history at all or perpetuated myths about a Cherokee great grandmother. Very excited to find this! (Shumake/Chavis/Evans)

  • Newly Unburied Melungeon Heritage

I didn’t want this podcast to end. As someone entirely new to this branch of history that I’m suddenly part of, it was like sitting in a room of people just as much in wonder as me, but with all of the research to help me start to understand where I come from and how I finally fit in.

GREAT job. I can’t wait for more.

Q: Were enslaved people promised freedom in exchange for service during the Revolution, and how did that play out?
Yes, some enslaved people were offered freedom by British commanders, while American policy varied; the British sometimes promised freedom to slaves who fled or joined, while some loyalists were evacuated or re-enslaved after the war, and the numbers involved remain debated.
S6 E3: Melungeon Author, Wayne Winkler
Q: How was the population of free Black and multiracial individuals documented before the first census?
Records prior to the 1790 census are incomplete, but local records and personal accounts indicate a small number of free Black farmers, tradesmen, and laborers in the southern colonies, with some evidence in areas like Virginia, the Carolinas, and Maryland.
S6 E3: Melungeon Author, Wayne Winkler
Q: What was the status of Melungeons and other mixed-race communities in colonial era America?
The colonies had no common usage of Melungeon or related terms in the early era; slavery existed everywhere but with varying degrees of recognition, and interracial unions were legal early on but became more restricted by the 18th century, with many multiracial people navigating indenture, social status, and complicated loyalties.
S6 E1: Melungeon Roots Resource Center & Online Community
Q: So, Jes, you're a Melungeon descendant. How and when did you discover your Melungeon ancestry? And tell us a little bit about the process.
Jes explains that she began in 2020–2021 during the pandemic, confronted walls in her family tree, learned about Melungeon connections, and used DNA admixture results to uncover diverse ancestries (European, African, Indigenous, Berber, Roma, Jewish, Acadian). She describes connecting surnames and regional histories (e.g., Scotch-Irish, Saponi, Catawba) and plans to document findings through the Melungeon Roots blog and community space, while emphasizing careful synthesis of clues and private work before public sharing.
