  • Mining the Psyche

This podcast presents perhaps the most consistent & insightful topics & guests around psychology, imagination, creativity & personal change. Even when I think a topic or guest will not be of interest, if I give Brian a few minutes, I nearly always get pulled in. Highly recommended.

Episode 131 deserves a do over. Rife with faulty reasoning. So in a hurry to disavow the west that says something like Christianity doesn't have concepts around death and rebirth. Several other baffling moments like this. There is simply no need to prop up one's cartoon version of one culture as a device to aggrandize another culture.

  • Thank You Brian

So happy to have found the Medicine Path with Brian James. I find that the topics he covers and guests interviewed really align with what I’m interested in uncovering. You can tell Brian’s level of integrity in how he shows up in conversation with the guests. Always, thoughtful, willing to respectfully disagree and bring nuance to subjects (sadly, a rare skill these days). He has skillfully interviewed Stephen Jenkinson several times which is not a simple task. These interviews with SJ brought m... more

  • I Love This Podcast

Brian is an open, knowledgeable podcast host who seems committed to providing a deep look into how we all step around those blurred lines between psychology, sociology and culture, and spirituality. It's not a fluffy podcast. I listen when I have time to pay close attention.

    It's valuable. I'm grateful.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

(Part One) Pillion (2025) and the Deep Psychology of BDSM & Kink | Douglas Thomas | HITW 218
Q: What did you think of the film?
The guest found the film surprisingly respectful toward its subjects, highlighting how it treats BDSM and leather culture with nuance rather than moralizing, and appreciating the balance between depiction and imagination.
[PREVIEW] Recovering Soul By Uncovering Your Personal Myth | Dennis Patrick Slattery | HITW 200
Q: So, just a little bit about where the book came from, because I didn't start out writing a book.
Dennis explains the origin of the book, noting his prior work teaching personal myth, his ongoing practice at a Benedictine monastery, and how those experiences shaped the writing and the inclusion of notes that eventually became the book.
[PREVIEW] Poetic Faiths: The Art of Embodied Philosophy | Tony Wolf | HITW 177
Q: What does Poetic Faith mean?
It's a framework adapted from Coleridge that asks people to engage with stories, poems, or other narratives by suspending disbelief, while still maintaining rational grounding, and to view faith as a personal, meaningful commitment rather than necessarily supernatural belief.
[PREVIEW] The Soulful Philosophy of James Hillman (RVP50) | Edward Casey | HITW 210
Q: Are you talking about the Terry Lectures at Yale that served as the basis for Re-visioning Psychology?
Yes. I heard about them almost accidentally, and I was intrigued, so I went to hear this three-part series, which eventually influenced Hillman's trajectory and the field.
Roots Deeper Than Whiteness: Reckoning With Race & Reclaiming Ancestors | David Dean | HITW 215
Q: What got you interested in it in the first place?
David became interested in the topic of whiteness and identity about 12 years ago while doing ancestry work that revealed how his ancestors identified.
