Yes, their first meeting occurred at Wake Island, which framed later recollections and set the stage for subsequent interactions during the Korean War period.
Rose Valland and The Art Front
Q: How did Valland navigate the dangers during the occupation?
She remained discreet, learned German to eavesdrop on conversations, and used careful, understated language to document art movements and transfers, all while avoiding obvious suspicion from the Nazis.
Rose Valland and The Art Front
Q: What were the main challenges in translating The Art Front?
Beyond language, the challenges included conveying culturally specific references and the tonal nuances Valland used to describe dangerous situations, requiring footnotes and careful editorial work to stay faithful to the original text.

Q: Can you summarize the Monuments Men and Women Foundation's goal with this translation project?
The foundation aims to make Valland's firsthand accounts accessible worldwide, preserving the integrity of her testimony while providing necessary context through footnotes so readers can understand the historical nuances.
