  • The special episodes have been great

To Rum’s perfect storm I’d like to add cost shifting.

I deal with a few ‘working retired’ people in a Sydney council - I love the term

And the episode on homelessness was great

  • better than nothing

It doesn't compare with local newspapers which I still miss years after we lost ours. I want to know more of what's going on in SE Melbourne area where I have a vote, and a lot less about Tassie or Sydney or some place where I don't. But - better than nothing 😳

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Thomas resigns, a sad loss, and tough budget decisions loom - #607
Q: What motivated you to pursue a TEDx talk and how did the process unfold?
Stow describes identifying a personal message rooted in disability advocacy, joining a TEDx community, applying to multiple events, and refining her talk through three live Houston presentations due to technical issues, ultimately delivering a message she hoped would inspire broader community engagement.
Special Edition: Municipal Monitors, ft. Tony Raunic - #538
Q: Why did the Darabin report take six months to see the light of day, and what are your thoughts on the publication of interim monitor reports?
The delay may reflect ministerial review and careful consideration of findings; interim reports should be published in a timely manner to maintain public accountability and provide transparency about progress and ongoing concerns.
Special Edition: Municipal Monitors, ft. Tony Raunic - #538
Q: Tony, before we wrap up, do you think the use of municipal monitors on the whole in Victoria has been an effective tool for improving governance at councils?
Overall, monitors have been effective, with some caveats about consistency and value; they provide independent oversight, valuable expertise, and can improve governance, though there are concerns about cost and the necessity of extensions depending on the council's progress.
Data centre warning, CEOs depart, and councillors reprimanded - ft. Greg McDonald #546
Q: What are the consequences of rate pegging and cost shifting on rural councils?
The guest discusses how rate caps and shifting responsibilities from higher levels of government squeeze council budgets, forcing hard decisions and limiting their ability to fund essential services.
Data centre warning, CEOs depart, and councillors reprimanded - ft. Greg McDonald #546
Q: Can you explain the breach of the Local Government Act and how the council manages its cash flow?
Greg McDonald explains that the council uses government funds as they come in and may temporarily use funds from one project to cover another until final acquittal is provided, emphasising there is no misappropriation and that full upfront funding would solve the issue.
