  • The special episodes have been great

To Rum’s perfect storm I’d like to add cost shifting.

I deal with a few ‘working retired’ people in a Sydney council - I love the term

And the episode on homelessness was great

  • better than nothing

It doesn't compare with local newspapers which I still miss years after we lost ours. I want to know more of what's going on in SE Melbourne area where I have a vote, and a lot less about Tassie or Sydney or some place where I don't. But - better than nothing 😳

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Contract renewals, sector reforms, and a new arena - ft. Fabian Dattner, #561
Q: Leadership Bottleneck, what exactly is that?
It's the gap that occurs when information and decision-making get stuck between executive levels and the rest of the organization, caused by workload, lack of long-term capability planning, and insufficient succession planning.
Grand Prix win, rate peg applications, and costly dump fires - ft Frank Wilkie #552
Q: How did the issue with short-term accommodation begin and why did Noosa decide to regulate it locally?
It started with distress among residents due to noise and displacement of long-term renters as short-term listings grew, which affected essential workers and the character of the town; the local law provided a targeted, enforceable framework with a hotline and manager accountability.
Suspended mayor, failed merger plan, and market failure - ft. Robert Hicks #555
Q: What is the central problem your paper addresses?
The central problem is the unjust burden placed on local governments to fund and deliver health services due to a market failure, with a strong case that this is not the responsibility of local governments and requires state and federal intervention.
Special Edition: Local Government's Perfect Storm, with Rum Charles
Q: But can we start by outlining how far back Rum would go with local government involvement?
Rum Charles describes joining in the mid-1990s, starting with training at councils, and gradually expanding to work across the sector, with a focus on customer experience and organizational culture.
Special Edition - the ABCD and Beyond of Local Government
Q: Right. So, can you explain this term asset-based community development in plain terms?
Asset-based community development is a strength-based approach that starts by mapping and leveraging what already exists in a community—people, groups, assets, stories, and connections—before identifying gaps, with the aim of co-designing solutions and centering the community in decision-making.
