Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Briana Gervat's Journey Along The Great War's Western Front
Q: Why self-publish, and what are the advantages and pitfalls you found in this route?
Self-publishing offered creative control and the ability to tell a personal journey without external gatekeeping, though it requires substantial self-promotion and marketing work.
Briana Gervat's Journey Along The Great War's Western Front
Q: Was Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 something you were conscious of while walking the Western Front?
Yes, it reminded me that wars and conflicts persist in Europe, making the past feel more immediate and the need for peace more poignant.
Briana Gervat's Journey Along The Great War's Western Front
Q: How did the plan for the walk formulate in your mind?
A combination of discovering the Western Front Way and a growing interest in deeper historical context, fueled by being a historian and the desire to experience war landscapes firsthand.
Briana Gervat's Journey Along The Great War's Western Front
Q: What impelled you to make that decision?
An urge to be outside, to walk through history, and to see how memory lives in the land themselves, not just in books.
Briana Gervat's Journey Along The Great War's Western Front
Q: So Briana, by way of kicking us off and sort of orientating us into your story, it's 2022, Covid is still very much a thing. How did you come to undertake this walk at that time?
Covid pushed me toward outdoor spaces as a form of escape and solace, and a chance to connect with history through the landscape, which ultimately led to the Western Front walk.
