  • So much to learn!

I can genuinely say that this is one of the most valuable "hidden gem" podcasts that I've ever run across! IAQ Radio is no doubt an incredible resource for indoor air quality professionals, but in the pandemic age, there's a lot to gain for laymen listeners as well. Radio Joe and the Zman consistently facilitate crucial conversations around cleaning up our indoor air that are both informative and engaging. Highly recommend checking it out!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Darrell Paulson - Life and Times of a Restoration Icon and Serial Volunteer Part 2
Q: If you were starting a restoration business today, would you do program work?
Depends on management quality and alignment with core capabilities; the guest would assess third-party parties and ensure they can maintain integrity and repeat business, while balancing risk and profit.
Ed Light - Life and Times of an IH Practicalist
Q: What were the biggest practical challenges in IAQ work during the early days of the field?
Key challenges included integrating engineering perspectives with public health approaches, building collaborations with facilities and maintenance, and shifting from a sampling-heavy paradigm to systematic assessments that address moisture, sources, and building operations.
Jeff May - Life and Times of an IEQ Pioneer
Q: How do you handle customers that panic about suspected mold?
I tell them to buy the Mold Survival Guide and educate them about not needing to worry unless there's airflow that could carry mold spores.
Jeff May - Life and Times of an IEQ Pioneer
Q: What are some common mistakes made during remediation?
The biggest mistake is leaving dirty areas untouched, especially the top of the foundation. It's also important to paint seal framing after cleaning, as mold can remain unseen and thrive afterwards.
Eugenia Mirica, PhD, EMSL Labs - Laboratory Methods for Wildfire Impact Assessment
Q: Would a gas stove also throw you off on that?
Gas stove, yes. Yes, that's because it's a harder carbon. If the oxygen ratio is not in a proper range, then yes, it could burn incomplete and uncontrollably and produce soot, yes.
