  • Cheap, not frugal

Advocated letting medical bills go to collections instead of paying. As a doctor who is legally required to provide emergency care to patients, I find this reprehensible. You’d never eat a meal then say “I’m not going to pay, what can you do?” This lacks integrity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ask HTM – Liquid Cash (How Much is Too Much), AI WW3 Portfolios, & Shopping Local (for a Mortgage) #1147
Q: Austin asks about local credit unions vs national lenders for a mortgage and whether to shop around.
They urge shopping around with multiple lenders (local credit unions and small banks, plus national options) to balance rate, fees, service, and likelihood of loan staying with a local servicer; emphasize the importance of comparing fees and points, not just interest rate.
Ask HTM – Liquid Cash (How Much is Too Much), AI WW3 Portfolios, & Shopping Local (for a Mortgage) #1147
Q: Becky asks about buying back years of service for pension vs. leaving Roth money intact.
They present a balanced view: each year bought back adds about $2,000/year in pension with a roughly 7% yield but reduces Roth flexibility and compounding; the hosts suggest saving up to fund some buys with cash while keeping Roth invested for long-term growth, and recommend a professional assessment for personalized planning.
Ask HTM – Liquid Cash (How Much is Too Much), AI WW3 Portfolios, & Shopping Local (for a Mortgage) #1147
Q: Mari asks how much cash is too much in savings when saving for a car.
They acknowledge Mari has a high cash reserve, recommend earmarking a smaller maintenance/repair fund, and suggest investing the rest in a taxable brokerage to outpace inflation given a multi-year horizon.
Ask HTM – Liquid Cash (How Much is Too Much), AI WW3 Portfolios, & Shopping Local (for a Mortgage) #1147
Q: Emily asks whether she should choose traditional IRA or rollover IRA when moving her 403(b) to Fidelity.
The hosts explain both are traditional retirement accounts with similar tax treatment and options; the rollover keeps options open for future employer plans, while a traditional IRA is straightforward if staying in one place; the DIY route via Fidelity's trustee-to-trustee transfer is highlighted as a solid option.
Avoiding the 'Middle Class Trap' w/ Scott Trench #1148
Q: How does the middle class trap influence retirement planning, and what practical steps can listeners take to gain liquidity without sacrificing long-term growth?
He argues that many savers get stuck maxing retirement accounts with little liquidity. The practical path is to balance pre-tax and after-tax assets, use house hacking to lower fixed costs, and harvest gains in after-tax accounts at favorable tax brackets to preserve optionality across life stages.
