  • Cheap, not frugal

Advocated letting medical bills go to collections instead of paying. As a doctor who is legally required to provide emergency care to patients, I find this reprehensible. You’d never eat a meal then say “I’m not going to pay, what can you do?” This lacks integrity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Flights Are Getting Pricier! (*here’s how to pay less*) w/ Kyle Potter #1133
Q: What should travelers do after spotting a great deal but before booking?
When a killer deal appears, you should act quickly, and consider whether you can rearrange dates or ask for time off; in many cases, you book first, then work out the details with travel partners or employers, because the deal may vanish within hours or minutes.
Flights Are Getting Pricier! (*here’s how to pay less*) w/ Kyle Potter #1133
Q: What about nonstop flights versus connections—are there real time savings enough to justify longer travel times?
If you're flexible with dates and destinations, you can find nonstop options on long-haul routes, but the cheapest fares almost always involve a connection. The value judgment comes down to what convenience is worth to you.
Ask HTM - Running the Financial Gamut From Squirreling Away an Emergency Fund to Real Estate Investing #1132
Q: Should Emily prioritize beefing up an emergency fund or increasing Roth IRA contributions given current cash flow?
Focus on building a three-to-six month emergency fund first to cover unexpected events, then gradually increase Roth contributions as cash flow allows, recognizing that the Roth can be more aggressive later once the emergency cushion is solid.
Ask HTM - Free Fidelity Funds, Credit Card Maxxing, & Debating a PTO Cash-Out #1126
Q: Hi Joel and Matt, what is up with the Robinhood Gold card and should I consider joining the Gold program to access the 3% cash back?
Amy asks about the Robinhood Gold card and whether joining the paid Gold membership will help unlock the 3% cash back, with discussion about the line-wait dynamics and the trade-offs of the card's rewards structure.
Can Millennials Count on Social Security? w/ Mike Piper #1127
Q: How does one account for the other components of Social Security like disability or survivor benefits when planning?
You should model the overall system as a bundle: retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, since the payroll taxes fund all of these, and omitting them can understate the value of the program; this leads to a more complete view of whether delaying or claiming earlier is optimal.
