  • One of my Favorite Shows Takes a Weird Jingoistic Turn

I have been listening to the show for a long time and I really enjoyed it and taking a lot of great investment and money advice. But today’s episode was so bizarre, going off on a generous rant about America and how amazing it is while we’re in the middle of a war and disenfranchising gerrymandering and attacks on our citizens. It really turned me off and made the whole podcast seemed very out of touch.

Ask HTM - (Gun) Hobby Spending Disagreements, International Roaming with the Low Cost Providers, & Managed Retirement Accounts FTW? #1162 (Bestie Ep)
Q: What are practical steps to handle a neighbor-tenant dynamic and mitigate issues when rentals next door affect your living environment?
Build a constructive, proactive line of communication with the landlord, verify licenses and insurance for any work, and look for opportunities to foster a positive neighborhood dynamic—this can include managing expectations and addressing issues early rather than letting tensions build.
Ask HTM - (Gun) Hobby Spending Disagreements, International Roaming with the Low Cost Providers, & Managed Retirement Accounts FTW? #1162 (Bestie Ep)
Q: Should Janet keep her Vanguard seven-figure account and still grow a Fidelity retirement plan, or move everything to a single provider?
There is no need to choose one path exclusively; maintaining accounts at both low-cost providers can be beneficial, allowing continued growth while comparing fee structures. The key is to avoid high-fee managed accounts and prioritize low-cost, DIY index funds.
Ask HTM - (Gun) Hobby Spending Disagreements, International Roaming with the Low Cost Providers, & Managed Retirement Accounts FTW? #1162 (Bestie Ep)
Q: Is paying off a mortgage early mathematically better than spreading payments out, given a low rate and substantial retirement savings elsewhere?
Paying off a mortgage early tends to be more advantageous in the early years of the loan due to higher interest payments there; if you already have strong investments and retirement savings, a blended approach that preserves liquidity and emotional comfort can be optimal. In Andrew's case, since he has a low rate and sizable investments, continuing to carry the mortgage while investing aggressively is reasonable, but the decision should also account for personal goals and risk tolerance.
Ask HTM - Inflating the 25x Rule, Online Car Refinancing, & Affordable ADUs (Bestie Ep) #1125
Q: How should I prioritize Roth vs HSA vs a traditional 457B, especially with a limited lump sum?
They compare the Roth IRA, HSA, and 457B on tax advantages and simplicity. The Roth is simple and reliable, HSAs offer triple/quadruple tax advantages but have more management complexity, and the traditional 457B is less favorable due to lack of match and tax timing; a balanced approach and trying both avenues can be prudent.
Ask HTM - Inflating the 25x Rule, Online Car Refinancing, & Affordable ADUs (Bestie Ep) #1125
Q: Should I build an ADU with cash, or take a construction loan given today's rates?
The hosts favor keeping liquidity if possible and recommend evaluating HELOC options for short-term liquidity, paying off debt quickly, and only taking a construction loan if the terms and timing align with a rapid payback plan; otherwise, avoid locking in high long-term debt.
