  • Odd

Extra star because it’s impressive to be this pretentious and this dumb. There is an obvious costal, irony poisoned, vibe to the podcast that could be appealing for some. However, they seem to be stuck in second gear when it comes to their film analysis. They can pick out big themes, and then discuss them, but can never connect what the film is trying to say about the themes. Overall, it’s an entertaining podcast, but if you are looking for thoughts on film that go beyond that of an angsty high ... more

  • Discussions you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere

This is probably the most interesting film criticism podcast around thanks to the depth and personalities of Aaron and Carlee. So much of popular film analysis these days is just summarizing and filtering art through some oversimplified worldview, which never happens on this podcast—the hosts bring a serious, multifaceted understanding of both the world and themselves to the show, which means that their conversations are always thought-provoking and insightful.

Yes, movies absolutely reflect political realities and the time and place they are made in.
The Quick and the Dead *TEASER*
Q: Can you give an example of one of the things you think this film has as an opportunity to be kind of laid in within the genre of The Western?
The film touches on themes of capitalism and despotism through the character Herod, but it doesn't fully engage these themes as deeply as it could have.
Saving Private Ryan feat. Brendan Hodges
Q: How does the film navigate themes of jingoism and militarism?
The film complicates traditional narratives of heroism by showcasing the visceral realities of war while simultaneously challenging viewers to question their preconceived notions about honor and sacrifice.
Saving Private Ryan feat. Brendan Hodges
Q: Brendan, what is your relationship with Spielberg and how has it evolved?
Growing up watching Spielberg's films, my appreciation has deepened as I've uncovered new layers to his work, especially in films like Saving Private Ryan that are often misunderstood.
Last Action Hero feat. Christopher Jason Bell
Q: What is your history with Last Action Hero? How do you feel about it? How has your relationship with it evolved over the years?
I grew up with it. It was on television a lot. That's how I saw it. I have to say it's probably my most seen Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.
