  • Disappointing

As some one with multiple degrees in history, perhaps my standards are too high, but the narrator coninutally mispronounces words. It drives me nuts as I find mysel yelling the correct pronouncation at my playback device multiple times per episode. The scripts also feel AI generated, so I question how much effort is really going into these episodes. So, for myself, I will be looking to scratch my history itch elsewhere.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Two Ships that Divided America, w/ David S. Reynolds
Q: Did Sumner say this somewhere else, and who else was saying it besides Sumner?
Yes, Reynolds confirms Sumner repeated the line, and he then discovers that Frederick Douglass and other figures echoed the comparison, broadening its historical resonance beyond Sumner alone.
How Do You Repay Those Who Died for Your Freedom? w/ Robert M. Edsel
Q: How did you come upon this story and decide to invest nine years in researching it?
I was studying World War II, asking how so many works of art survived the war, and I kept hearing about people who saved them, which led me to the Monuments Men network. The deeper I dug, the more I realized this was not just about a cemetery but about the living who chose to honor the dead, and that compelled me to continue for years to tell this broader, hopeful story.
Conversations: The Lost Empire of Emanuel Nobel, w/ Douglas Brunt
Q: What drew you to Emanuel Nobel as a subject?
Brunt explains that Emanuel's story emerged from a long trajectory of researching the broader Nobel family and recognizing Emanuel's pivotal role in Russia's oil industry, which was obscured by political upheaval and later Soviet suppression.
Conversations: 1970s - The Decade that Made the Marathon Cool
Q: If you could have your readers take one idea away from The Long Run, what do you hope for that idea to be?
He hopes readers see running as a way to push past mediocrity and realize that personal, everyday efforts can be extraordinary, turning a simple sport into a vehicle for personal transformation and collective cultural change.
Conversations: 1970s - The Decade that Made the Marathon Cool
Q: How does that feel? How did you come about making this book?
Martin explains that the book grew from a personal passion as both a runner and a coach, and that his aim was to tell the broader history of the running revolution by weaving together four iconic figures with the era's social context, rather than writing a straight biography.
