  • Girl Babblers

This podcast could be amazing. It is not. It is near-awful and nearly useless. The reason is because these two professors like each other too much, and have little word games between them trying to oneup each other on who is the more clever in dissecting a participle here or quoting some dead theologian there. Their interview for example with the fellow professor who wrote a book on Agur (prov 30), is a great example. It is 26 minutes of babble before we even start discussing agur, then immedia... more

  • Disappointed

So disappointed to see a legalistic, authoritarian, literalistic point of view invited. Patriarchal, misogynistic too. No true gospel of grace, forgiveness, mercy or love.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

100. Encountering Jesus in the Book of Psalms (Chad Bird)
Q: How did your engagement with the original languages of the Psalms impact your understanding of them?
One of the advantages is to say, OK, this is the Hebrew word, and this is the English word that we've used to translate it. But we really need six other English words to bring out the full nuance of what is communicated in the Hebrew.
100. Encountering Jesus in the Book of Psalms (Chad Bird)
Q: How do the Psalms help us pray and encounter Christ?
When I pray the Psalms, I think, okay, I'm not alone. I'm praying these with Jesus. He prayed them as the first century Jew, and I know that he's at the right hand of the Father, constantly interceding for me.
98. Rediscovering the Dead Sea Scrolls with Dr. Andrew Perrin
Q: How do the Dead Sea Scrolls impact the way we understand part of the historical and cultural context of scripture?
The Dead Sea Scrolls illustrate that the Bible is not an isolated text but is deeply intertwined with the cultures and communities that shaped it. They reveal the various ways in which these texts were interpreted and understood in different historical contexts, enriching our understanding of scriptural development.
95. Beyond Foretelling: The Diverse Roles of Biblical Prophets with Dr. Todd Hibbard
Q: How similar or different are prophets in ancient Israel and Judah compared to other Near Eastern prophets?
Prophets of ancient Israel tended to be more critical of monarchy and concerned with social justice than their Near Eastern counterparts, who were often pro-monarchy.
95. Beyond Foretelling: The Diverse Roles of Biblical Prophets with Dr. Todd Hibbard
Q: What do prophets do?
Prophets engage in a variety of activities, including giving political advice, performing miracles, and serving as social and legal critics.
