  • The Bible through a Marxist lens

Who do you think will be helped if you start with Marxism and then try to understand Christianity from that perspective

  • A thought-provoking podcast which promotes biblical scholarship

OnScript has helped open up the world of biblical scholarship to me. There is much groupthink and dogma in biblical studies (particularly from secular scholars). OnScript presents a wide range of viewpoints, including those of Bible-believing scholars, which I appreciate.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kevin Vanhoozer – Mere Christian Hermeneutics (Part 2)
Q: Does a mere Christian hermeneutic presuppose specific doctrines like penal substitutionary atonement, and does it risk conflicts with other gospel presentations or worldviews?
Vanhoozer answers that the book aims to be at peace with sincere Bible-believing scholars, does not require adopting any single atonement theory, and favors multiple metaphors and frames of reference to enrich understanding, while encouraging compatibility with broader gospel presentations as long as they align with the creation-fall-redemption sequence and the central claim of Christ.
Kevin Vanhoozer – Mere Christian Hermeneutics (Part 1)
Q: Esther asks how the book's framework handles doctrinal disagreement and whether it can lead to more consistent doctrine and ethics across a fractured church.
Vanhoozer replies that while Mere Christian Hermeneutics does not claim to solve all doctrinal disputes, it aims to transform how Christians disagree by centering Scripture's purpose and the glory of God, and by promoting humility and a virtuous reading practice within canonical bounds.
Jen Singletary – When Things Become Deities (in the ancient Near East)
Q: What kinds of texts and genres fall under ancient Near Eastern text, and does Hebrew Bible count within that umbrella?
She confirms that Hebrew Bible is included as ancient Near Eastern text and describes the wide range of genres from clay tablets to papyri, including letters, myths, epics, laws, and other textual forms.
Jen Singletary – When Things Become Deities (in the ancient Near East)
Q: Okay, so we'll start by asking how you ended up in Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Hebrew Bible?
Jennifer explains a lifelong fascination with ancient languages inspired by Indiana Jones, leading her to graduate studies in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East, with eventual focus on Ancient Near Eastern prophecy and related fields.
Ervine Sheblazm – The Emotionally Healthy Paul
Q: It's a topic of emotional health. Why don't you riff on that?
I describe emotional health as a disciplined integration of transparency, vulnerability, and balance across physical, mental, and spiritual domains, using Paul as a model to translate ancient writings into practical emotional practices.
