Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

James Hoffmeier - Israel In and Out of Egypt
Q: What is your view on dating the Exodus—the 13th century versus the 15th century—and what evidence most strongly supports your current perspective?
My view has shifted toward the 13th century based on the geographical and topographic evidence from the Delta, the absence of clear strong Egyptian textual anchors in the 18th Dynasty for the Exodus narrative, and the corroborating toponymic and architectural data from 19th Dynasty sources that align with biblical descriptions more plausibly than earlier dates.
James Hoffmeier - Israel In and Out of Egypt
Q: Along those lines, what would you identify as the three most important archaeological discoveries that have advanced our understanding of Egypt's relationship with early Israel since the 1990s?
The top discoveries include the expanded geological work in northwestern Sinai revealing paleo-environments; the ongoing excavations at Tell El-Mascoutah and Tel El Borg that illuminate early Delta occupation and the Sakkot region; and the integration of toponymic data with Anastasi papyri that sharpen our geographic reconstruction of Goshen and related routes, all of which collectively support a Delta-centric setting and challenge earlier dates.
Stephen Carlson - Mary, Joseph, and the so-called "Inn"
Q: What is the significance of the terminology "kataluma" in different contexts?
It means a place to stay and does not imply the existence of an inn as traditionally thought.
Stephen Carlson - Mary, Joseph, and the so-called "Inn"
Q: What led you to write this piece?
I go through and read the Nativity accounts every Christmas to see if anything pops out at me, and I realized the existing harmonizations were too simplistic.
David DeSilva - Archaeology, Jesus, and Paul
Q: Are there any big outstanding questions in New Testament textual scholarship that could use archaeology?
Unfortunately, archaeology does not help much; unlike the Old Testament, early Christian groups were small and left minimal traces in the archaeological record.
