A cabinetmaker's notebook by James Krenov is a relatively famous book that I've been avoiding reviewing for a while now, join me on today's podcast as a I tell you why.
Chinese classical furniture in the Ming style demonstrates some very interesting solutions to typical problems, some fascinating joinery and some timeless elegance in design. I found this book to be a great "read" - its got very little text but lots ... more
A fun book that I enjoy is this book on kinetic toys by Bob Gilsdorf. It's one that I return to every so often to look for inspiration for a project with my boys. I hope that one day visitors to our house will be encouraged to join in and make a toy ... more
A great book if you want a really in depth look at the core tools in your workshop. I enjoyed this book and could heartily recommend it to anyone who is interested in the distilled wisdom of a master craftsman.

It has been a while since the last podcast was posted and I hope there are more to come.
I’ve been listening to Ray’s calm and considered synopses of great hand tool woodworking books for a 9 months and love it. Short, sweet, thought provoking and focused on my interest in hand tool woodworking. The book reviews are interesting and likely to inspire woodworking woodworms but this is not why I like it - realistically I’m not going to buy or read my way through that many woodworking books (at least not soon). No, I like it for the accumulated experience of someone further down the roa... more
I’m really enjoying this podcast. I don’t have any woodworking friends, let alone hand tool woodworking friends (let alone hand tool woodworking friends that like to read books about hand tool woodworking). This podcast takes the place of conversations I wish I could have about hand tool woodworking and it’s literature. Many of the books on this podcast I haven’t heard about and I’m grateful for the recommendations.
I can highly recommend this podcast to anyone interested in hand tool woodworking. Ray does an amazing job with the book reviews. In addition, the narrators personal insights into woodworking philosophy paired with a calm, contemplative voice make it easy to slow down and focus on the inherent value of crafting things with our own hands.
Thank you for doing this podcast! It is wonderful to hear a different perspective on books I have read as well as an opinion on books that are on my ever-growing “to read” shelf. That shelf may or may not be “ever growing” thanks to some of your recommendations 🙃.
The interviews are refreshing mixed in with the book reviews. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to your review of the newly freely released Anarchist Workbench (that one skipped the “to read” line).
