  • A breath of fresh gravel dust!

THIS is how you cover gravel cycling. A cycling journalist I respect for the most part has been complaining about how boring it is to cover gravel racing, but he’s making the mistake of thinking that it can be turned into a spectator sport when these things we call “races” exist entirely for the participants. I think event directors would do well to prohibit media coverage except from participants. I don’t want to know who finished on the podium unless the journalists blabbing about it was in co... more

If you’re wanting the latest UCI gravel racing news, this is not your podcast. If you love to ride gravel roads for the challenge, for the camaraderie, or to just ride quiet car-free roads, this is your podcast. Great information, great conversation from two people who love gravel.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Define Success
Q: How important is media coverage and sponsorship in defining success?
Media coverage and sponsorship can boost visibility, but Pryor argues true success lies in the lived experiences of participants and sustaining local, affordable events that bring people together.
Define Success
Q: Why did Pryor pivot from a pro gravel race idea to Grinduro-style format?
Because Grinduro-style events align better with the gravel ethos—celebrating community, fun, and accessible participation—while still showcasing fast riding for those who want it.
Dreams of Yesterday
Q: Regarding the kit you used, what are some of the things that the cycling industry got right from back then, what did they get wrong, and what would you have liked to have had on the tours but didn't due to funds and your dirtbag approach? Also, what would you have liked to endure the test of time and still be able to use today?
He notes that the industry got the basic touring kit right—racks, panniers, and the concept of cross‑country touring—but got tires and bike choices limited, with 27-inch wheels and early 90s touring bikes being scarce. He would have liked more water storage mounts and better water access, as well as more ubiquitous transport options; for enduring gear, he cites the core concept of racks and the ability to adapt gear over time, plus the idea that the experience and skills of planning and improvisation are what remains most valuable, even as technology and materials evolve.
Where We Came From with Greg Gleason
Q: How did you first get started in cycling?
Growing up in South Dakota, I spent a lot of time exploring on bikes—riding to school, saving for a road bike, and then getting into mountain biking in college. A move into racing came from a friend group in SDSU and trying out local race series, which eventually led to gravel exposure.
Where We Came From with Jeff Kerkove
Q: How did sponsors like Ergon get involved in Trans Iowa?
Ergon and other brands got involved early by recognizing the need for practical gear and testing opportunities for riders, providing grips, saddles, and other contact-point gear that helped the field try new equipment and promoted the event.
