  • Informative and relevant

This is a great training oriented cycling podcast. I appreciate having coaches that race different disciplines and the perspective they offer. I like the more recent short episodes but think when we get into race season it’s fun to hear updates on host races, results, etc.

  • Informative coaching podcast

I appreciate how the coaches try relate their personal training experiences, how it worked for them, and why they would recommend it to athletes they coach.

Being able to email questions and listen to the coaches go through their thought process on why they would recommend a particular course of action, has a lot of value for me.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 199 - Balancing Weight Loss / Performance and Coaching Advice
Q: When to prioritize weight loss over power gains for Big O?
Balance but lean toward cycling phases: allow weight loss in base/off-season, but protect high-quality training during peak and race blocks; monitor metabolic impact and adjust deficits accordingly with professional nutrition support.
Episode 198 - Does Following a Training Plan Really Matter and Estimating Your Lactate Turn Points
Q: Do training plans actually matter for someone who struggles with consistency?
Plans matter as a framework to create consistency; even a flexible schedule with key workouts can help maintain structure and progress toward goals.
Episode 193 - Is AI Coming for Our Jobs?!
Q: With all this talk of AI and coaching, how should we use it correctly for training given that I'm self-coached?
Use AI as a support tool rather than a replacement for foundational knowledge and personal judgment. Start with a strong knowledge base (foundational texts like Joe Friel's Training Bible), set clear goals, and treat AI outputs as prompts or frameworks to be refined with your own experience and, if possible, coach input for accountability and nuance.
Episode 190 - Training While Acclimating to Altitude, Pacing with Heart Rate, and Ultra Racing Prep
Q: What heart rate pacing should Jim use for a four-hour race on a similar course, given he did 32 miles at about 87% of max last year?
If Jim is accurately estimating his max heart rate, a pace closer to 90-91% of that max for a four-hour effort is reasonable, but altitude, progression in fitness, and individual response mean you should target around 90-92% of lactate threshold heart rate rather than fixed max HR percentages. With training improvements, you may sustain a bit higher than last year, but expect some attenuation at altitude and plan for a conservative start.
Episode 184 - Optimizing Warmup and Coaches Anecdotes
Q: What is the best warm up routine to get ready for a hard early race pace?
The hosts suggest a tiered warmup that engages different energy systems, with short, progressive efforts and strategic activation focused on muscles used in cycling, plus practical fueling for the start, all tailored to race length and course profile.
