  • How did I not know this podcast existed?

I first discovered Granta Magazine in Waterstones Preston in 1999 and became obsessed. Now in 2024, post pandemic and post my subscription expiring some years ago, I hope this is just the thing I need to get me back in touch with it.

  • Andrew O’Hagan

Very much enjoyed this episode. The interviewers struck the right note, expressing knowledge about the body of the writer’s work, while allowing him a good amount of time to express his opinions about his work, about writing / publishing in general and the effect of world politics on writing. Very good. J Alex C

  • Inspirational

This podcast literally blew my mind. You would not believe the serendipitous journey I have been on to get here. Your perspective on how our demographic (I’m using demographic in its broadest and most minute definition) shapes our viewpoint of the world, mostly how important it is to be aware of that...I suppose a more intellectual explanation of ‘another man’s shoes’.

Honestly, it’s all too much to speak to without a keyboard....Carmen Maria Machado, you have a new fan. I’m so grateful to have... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Christopher Bollas, The Granta Podcast
Q: How do you think of your own method vis-a-vis other psychoanalytic approaches, and how often do you speak in a session?
He explains variable analyst activity depending on frequency of sessions, emphasizing listening over directing and the importance of allowing the patient's unconscious to guide the session.
Christopher Bollas, The Granta Podcast
Q: So Christopher, for most of your life, you've been practicing the dark arts of psychoanalysis. So how did this interest or passion become so central for you?
Bollas describes a path from clinical training to a transformative realization that listening and understanding the patient's unconscious narratives are core to healing, with his early experiences and academic work shaping his distinctive emphasis on the assumed and the maternal order.
Sujatha Gidla, The Granta Podcast
Q: How was the book received in Andhra Pradesh?
Sujatha shares that there was a surprising response from an enlightened middle class, but also significant opposition from various groups preventing its translation.
Sujatha Gidla, The Granta Podcast
Q: So, Yata, there's a great deal of scholarly debate about the emergence of untouchability in Indian society and why and how the caste system brought about this concept.
Sujatha explains that her ancestor's story is typical and reveals how tribal groups became untouchables historically.
Karan Mahajan, The Granta Podcast
Q: How do you see the relationship between personal and political history in your writing?
I am really fascinated as a writer by how people come to their ideologies, particularly how everyday interactions shape their responses to politics.
