  • Great guests, but I struggle with the host

I haven’t found a podcast with such high caliber, accomplished guests within the tech industry.

I’ve been listening since the early days and still listen; however, I’ve always hoped Joubin would develop more as an interviewer. He clearly does his research and has now had such intimate access to so many successful individuals, but he regularly interjects with personal stories, opinions, and commentary that takes away from the focus, the guest. The delta between his professional experience and t... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Silicon Valley Insider In The Pentagon | DoW Emil Michael
Q: What are the things you really care about in your job today?
Three priorities are discussed: infusing AI into the Department of War to modernize a massive, aging organization; supporting new defense tech startups to build domestic capabilities; and solving critical national problems like domestic mineral supply chains and batteries, with a focus on faster, cheaper, and more capable systems.
The Silicon Valley Insider In The Pentagon | DoW Emil Michael
Q: Are you going to the State of the Union, and will you meet the USA hockey team there?
The discussion touches on possible appearances, but the focus shifts to broader context about public figures and events; there isn't a definitive answer given in this line, just speculation and light replies.
How Kevin Mandia Built the Most Trusted Name in Cybersecurity
Q: What are the biggest changes you've seen in talent and organizational dynamics with AI-native teams?
Mandia notes faster development cycles, the need for closer integration between daily engineering and go-to-market, and a shift in compensation expectations as AI talent becomes more prevalent.
How Kevin Mandia Built the Most Trusted Name in Cybersecurity
Q: What shaped your decision to bootstrap Mandiant initially, and how did funding later alter your path?
Mandia explains that bootstrapping kept the focus on customer success and profitability, while funding later came in to accelerate growth but required balancing short-term discipline with long-term ambition.
How Sierra Is Pulling Ahead in the AI Race | Co-founder Bret Taylor
Q: Sorry, you used the phrase failure is an orphan. Can you explain that?
The idea is that successful products trigger wide credit, with many people claiming involvement, while failures are blamed on various teams, making it hard to identify the actual cause and learn from it; the goal is to uncover truth by dissecting incentives and avoiding storytelling that masks the real issues.
