Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

AI and mental health: Are smartphones and AI reshaping our brains; and our society? Marc D. Ritter
Q: How reversible are brain alterations caused by substantial smartphone use in children, and what does the current evidence suggest about long-term changes?
The brain is plastic and can change, but reversibility is still uncertain especially for long-term, heavy use; evidence is evolving and longitudinal data in this area is limited, so we cannot say definitively how reversible it is.
AI and mental health: Are smartphones and AI reshaping our brains; and our society? Marc D. Ritter
Q: Marc, what first drew you to study neuroscience in relation to online gaming and addiction, and how do you view society changing with technology in our environment?
I started from my own experiences with early tech use and noticing how it shifted from a habit to a compulsion, which led me to study the brain's reward systems and to found AWE Digital Wellness to help kids build healthier relationships with technology.
The Agentic Patient 1: ChatGPT as a triage layer for cancer patients
Q: How did you build and train your tailor-made GPT, and how long did it take?
He compiled thousands of papers, fed them into a custom GPT that did not browse the internet but used provided documents, and spent weeks refining prompts and cross-checking outputs with clinicians and his own research to align results with reality.
The Agentic Patient 1: ChatGPT as a triage layer for cancer patients
Q: What kind of prompts did you use to identify which papers to read first, and how detailed were you about your condition?
Initially, a broad prompt to identify papers related to his diagnosis yielded a long list; over time he learned to craft iterative prompts with guardrails, citing sources and ensuring relevance, but acknowledged that AI could misinterpret context without careful prompting.
Cybersecurity 2.0: Defending Healthcare in the Age of Generative AI
Q: What practical steps can individuals take to improve their mobile security?
Audit app permissions monthly, disable permissions when not needed, and consider using mobile antivirus as part of a broader approach to protecting devices that carry health apps and data.
