  • Much Needed

The voices on this podcast are much needed, especially during these times. I’ve been a listener since near the beginning of the podcast in 2016, just as I was leaving evangelicalism. It’s been a constant source of hope for me, knowing I’m not alone. I also love the diversity of the guests. Many podcasts fail at this and fail miserably, but this one is very good.

  • Lots of swearing

1st episode has a lot of swearing. Says the podcast is rated clean. I could be interested in the dialogue but not interested in crass speech. Almost like the podcaster and his guest are using their new found “freedom” from evangelicalism to swear and think they sound cool. They don’t.

  • Romans 5:3-5

This is a voice we need. You fill a niche, Blake, that is not being filled. We need you. Keep it going. I’m new to your podcast but hanging on every word. I’m an X-vangelical too. I think there are a lot of us out here. Refusing to compromise our faith over a mobster cult like worship of someone whom doesn’t hold the honor or integrity required for any public service position, let alone president, which he has mistaken for king. We need your voice. We all need each other in this space. We can ma... more

  • Skipped throughout Sarah McCammon

I tried to hear the episode with Sarah McCammon as my debut to this podcast but it wasn’t listenable- it skipped throughout like an old cd and I couldn’t decipher it. I’m soooo bummed. Can someone fix this please? Or maybe it was just me?

I know I will love this podcast but seriously this is a big disappointment.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Becoming Neighbors with Amar D. Peterman
Q: You write about deconstruction and being prophetic from outside the tradition. Can Christians learn from those who leave the faith, or should that be considered off-limits?
The guest argues that listening to deconstructors is essential for reform and that prophecy can come from outside the church; remaining open to outsiders' insights strengthens faith communities rather than weakening them.
Becoming Neighbors with Amar D. Peterman
Q: What was Moody like for you coming from rural Wisconsin, and how did that shape your path toward Princeton and beyond?
He explains Moody's rigid white evangelical framework, his pursuit of a broader, more inclusive theological education, and how mentors encouraged him to explore beyond evangelical boundaries, leading to Princeton and a more expansive view of faith.
Becoming Neighbors with Amar D. Peterman
Q: In talking about books, I do like to start just by talking about your own experience within church and starting at the start. So where did you grow up and what were the religious environments of your upbringing like?
Amar describes a bipolar upbringing between a Polish Catholic neighborhood and a white evangelical megachurch; he faced pressure to conform and felt tension around race, identity, and inclusion, which shaped his later critique of evangelical spaces.
Money, Lies, and God with Katherine Stewart
Q: How do the mindsets of followers function within the anti-democratic movements?
They are driven by identitarianism, persecution complex, catastrophism, and authoritarianism which intertwine to support the movement.
Money, Lies, and God with Katherine Stewart
Q: What changes have you observed since Trump was elected?
The infusion of tech money has empowered thinkers in the anti-democratic movement while religious right leaders remain important.
