  • Hands-down the Best Software Podcast Out There!

What a great podcast (and not only for its focus on Elixir which is the best programming language out there), but also for the wide variety and guests! Highly recommended!

  • Technology and people in equal measure

I really like their focus on the practice of building and running technology, especially on the people aspects. While it’s pretty Elixir focussed, no ecosystem is truly an island so there are a lot of other things that get discussed. Excellent pod!

Owning Your AI Stack with Zach Daniel
Q: How should teams balance cost, control, and security when owning their AI stack?
Cost matters, but token value can still justify spend; more importantly, teams should prioritize control and security by building a focused harness, co-locating knowledge bases with the code, using human review for knowledge updates, and avoiding over-reliance on external context layers that can introduce risk and complexity.
Owning Your AI Stack with Zach Daniel
Q: What is the difference between deterministic code generation and LLM generated code?
Deterministic code generation uses explicit transformations on code, often via ASTs, and can precisely rewrite parts of the codebase with awareness of context like module aliases, whereas LLM generation is a probabilistic next-token process that outputs text which then needs a harness to call tools and manage broader architecture; both have valid uses but require different workflows and guardrails.
Curiosity, Courage, and the Human Side of Software with Ellyse Cedeno
Q: Can you give an example where soft influence helped move a project forward without hard authority?
Cedeno describes situations where teams benefited from collaborative approaches, understanding stakeholders' concerns, and using soft influence to guide decisions, rather than issuing top-down mandates, which led to greater trust and smoother execution.
Curiosity, Courage, and the Human Side of Software with Ellyse Cedeno
Q: How do you express understanding of a company's goals and not just follow orders?
She emphasizes the importance of one-on-ones, directly addressing goals and fears with managers, and proving reliability by contributing meaningfully to documents and decisions, which helps partners see you as a collaborator rather than a mere doer.
Curiosity, Courage, and the Human Side of Software with Ellyse Cedeno
Q: What does it mean to keep a beginner's mindset decades into a career, and how do you stay curious?
Cedeno argues that curiosity is a default state for many people and staying curious often requires deliberately protecting time for exploration, balancing work with personal interests, and not letting perfectionism stifle experimentation.
