  • Why I Appreciate Down the Yellow Brick Pod

I first watched the 1939 film version of “The Wizard of Oz” when I was 6, have been a fan of the Oz books since 5th grade, and am now obsessulated with “Wicked.” It has been wonderful to have a space that encourages my interest in Oz. I have dreamt of continuing the representation of Oz through film, as that is what I am majoring in, and this podcast gives me more confidence that I am able to do that. I also hope to have an extensive Oz collection someday. I truly appreciate all that Down the Ye... more

  • So much to learn (and unlearn)

I cannot believe I didn’t discover this pod sooner, but better late than never, as they say. As an avid Ozian since childhood, I am enjoying looking at that world with a current day lens. Looking forward to listening and learning more through each episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"A Great and Powerful Tyranny" with author Victoria Carbol
Q: We'd love to peel behind the curtain on your Oz DNA. What are your first memories of the story and how did it first find you?
Victoria recalls the movie as her mother's favorite and explains how the film and broader Oz universe sparked a lifelong fascination with portal fantasy, leading to a desire to write a richer, more personal take that still nods to the original canon.
"Alice With a Why" with author Anna James
Q: What were some of the most pivotal turns on your Yellow Brick Road that led to your writing career?
Anna James shares that a formative English teacher and the choice to study history rather than English kept her relationship with reading honest and enjoyable, while early opportunities in publishing and journalism helped her recognize the potential to write fiction later on. This combination of mentorship, cross-field experience, and practical publishing insight set the stage for her career.
"The Witch of Maracoor" by Gregory Maguire (Part 2)
Q: What is your reaction to the way the Grimory's power is depicted and its influence on Rain?
We talk about how the grimmery can regenerate itself and empower Rain, but also pose questions about responsibility, memory, and the line between magic and self-determination.
"West of Wicked" with author Nikki St. Crowe
Q: Can you give our listeners a taste of what to expect from West of Wicked without spoilers?
West of Wicked centers on an older Dorothy navigating a harsher Oz, where she confronts darker forces and questions whether going home is truly what she needs, while embracing her power and the morally gray paths that surround her relationships and choices.
"The Oracle of Maracoor" by Gregory Maguire (Part 1)
Q: First question, since we're in the in-between book of a trilogy, can you recall another in-between book that is your favorite of another trilogy?
Tara and EmKay discuss favorites among in-between books to illustrate how mid-book entries can carry thematic weight and set up climactic conclusions, with Michael Luongo and Michael Frumkins weighing in on which bridges between installments stuck with them.
