  • Unparalleled Guest Speakers - Same Stories

Really enjoyed the podcast as a first time listener. For emergency management podcasts, it has by far the best list of guests of any podcast in the industry. For fans who listen in the long-term, it’s frustrating to hear many of the same stories over and over again. It’s cool that someone helped launch the use of drones in 2017, but many DHS agencies had already implemented drones at the time, so it’s not like it was a revolutionary for that branch of government. I would rather hear more stories... more

  • Love this podcast!

I am fairly new to the field of emergency management with only my education and 2 years of experience. I have found this podcast as a huge resource. John is a great host and everyone he brings on has such great information to provide! I always look forward to the next episode.

  • Niche & Informative

John has a very niche topic and obviously is an expert in the field of disasters, emergencies and large-scale rescue/relief operations. Found myself learning some practical tips to apply to my own life as well as some general facts and even human psychology that I hadn't heard before. Top notch.

  • Leadership Skills

I first started listening because I want to be prepared for emergencies and thought I could get advice from the experts.

Not only did I get some great ideas, I found myself taking notes! The discussions John has with those who have strong skills and “street level” experiences are invaluable.

No matter your career field, you an apply what they suggest. I highly recommend this series.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Emergency Manager Ashley Ahlquist | Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management
Q: Can you kind of just give your background of why social media was important to you and your approach to doing outreach?
Ashley explains that being a millennial, she recognizes the importance of utilizing social media to connect with communities, especially after her tenure in dispatch where such outreach was limited.
Author & Former Green Beret Herb Thompson | Principal Program Manager of Veterans Services at ServiceNow
Q: What advice do you have for those struggling to maintain their passion post-transition?
Thompson encourages people to be curious, build relationships, and surround themselves with positive influences to navigate their next steps successfully.
Author & Former Green Beret Herb Thompson | Principal Program Manager of Veterans Services at ServiceNow
Q: Why do you think the transition is so difficult for veterans and first responders?
Thompson explains that the transition is tough because military and first responder roles are lifestyle-oriented, creating a deep sense of purpose and camaraderie, which disappears upon leaving, leading to identity crises.
Director John Scrivani, CEM | Office of Safety, Security & Emergency Management | Virginia Department of Transportation
Q: What is your experience with emergency management and politics?
Scrivani emphasizes that politics is integral to emergency management and advises newer emergency managers to learn management expectations.
Jeremy R. Urekew, WP-C, TP-C, HTM | Hoist Rescue Paramedic | Emergency Manager
Q: If you could give advice to anybody in this field, what would you give?
Normalization of deviance is a big issue; emergency services should practice and train until they can’t get it wrong, rather than just getting it right.
