  • Interview with Peter Sandman

Enjoyed the interview and PS views. His positions on the pandemic and Dr. Fauci were provocative and made me think about how it all came down. Can you have him back every six months or so as a revolving guest to explore his ideas further? Maybe he could on each visit comment on the most recent emergency incidents and the crisis comms responses, and critique what went right and wrong.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Annie Mack Vest OK Emergency Management
Q: How is Oklahoma's emergency management agency organized and staffed?
The agency is small, about 50 staff plus the State 911 coordination team; there is a chief operations officer, no deputy, and divisions for resilience, recovery, preparedness, and response, with a focus on regional coordinators who build stronger local relationships.
Performance Reviews for Dummies
Q: What practical technique does Lloyd recommend for delivering feedback?
Use the 'Oreo' technique by sandwiching areas for improvement between positive feedback and actionable steps, and avoid the word 'but' to keep the conversation constructive.
Performance Reviews for Dummies
Q: How has the appraisal process evolved according to the guest?
Appraisals have shifted from annual events to continuous feedback with regular check-ins, focusing on today's performance and future growth rather than past mistakes.
Performance Reviews for Dummies
Q: What is the key prerequisite to giving effective feedback according to Ken Lloyd?
Self-insight into one's own strengths, motivations, and areas for improvement is essential; without it, feedback to others becomes less meaningful and harder to act on.
Planning For Resilience for Healthcare Facilities
Q: What keeps plans from being followed during real events and how can this be addressed?
People may go blank during crises, so regular drills, leadership tabletop exercises, and continuous education help ensure familiarity with plans and reduce freeze moments; plans must be adaptable to real-time circumstances.
