Don gives the most informative advice for gardeners in the sacramento valley. I’ve been confused about fall/winter planting schedule since i started gardening three years ago and Don has explained it crystal clear. Thank you so much for doing this and keep up with the great work! I’ll be visiting the redwood barn nursery soon :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Davis Garden Show, 16 July 2026
Q: Caitlin from Walnut Creek asks for tips on harvesting winter squash and curing them for storage in a hot summer climate.
The guest explains to follow the packet days for harvest, allow fruit to reach full ripeness on the vine, and then cure before storage; winter squash store well and can be kept in a root cellar or a cool, dry area, with attention to sugar development and skin integrity.
Davis Garden Show, 02 April 2026
Q: What is the best approach to watering around a rain event?
Use a long soaking approach with drip systems when light rain is coming, monitor the ET rate, and don't over-irrigate unless a multi-day rain is not expected; rainfall can supplement soil moisture without waste if managed properly.
Davis Garden Show, 12 March 2026
Q: So Emily finishes off her comments with, what do you recommend for growing vegetables and annual flowers in a raised bed? I mean, she's talking about what amendments you recommend.
Don explains a mix of organic materials and nitrogen sources, emphasizing the use of steer manure for long-term nitrogen buildup, chicken manure for rapid nitrogen release with caution, and incorporating compost with a nitrogen source to maintain soil health and plant vigor in raised beds.
Davis Garden Show, 19 February 2026
Q: How should I manage my curved planting bed to address drainage issues?
Consider creating a French drain to redirect water or adjust the grading to manage standing water.
Davis Garden Show, 19 February 2026
Q: I have a lemon tree with a split branch, can it be salvaged?
The split may heal itself but also risks infection; consider pruning if you're concerned about safety.
